4age Engine Swap To V6

Guys, I have Toyota Trueno 1993 car which currently has a 4age 20v silvertop engine. Have had it for like 20 years almost. The engine is starting to show its age and is smoking abit but its still solidly reliable. It was my daily driver but got a Nissan Skyline which is now my daily so I want to make the trueno as a kind of project/hobby car. I was musing with the idea of swapping out the 4age and putting in a v6.

Now, the engine bay is the same as for the corolla ae101 and infact a 5afe engine bolts on perfectly. So anyone who has swapped out a 5afe engine for a v6, your views are most welcome. Or anyone else who has swapped an inline 4 for a v6.

Now, the thing is, I dont want to change the driving dynamics of the car. The 4age engine is about 154kgs so a v6 weigning upto at most 180kgs should be fine above that and the car may not handle too well. Now obviously a 2jz is out of the question since that thing weighs like 300kgs… almost double. Since the 4age is iron block, I would need a v6 aluminium block so that its as light as possible and as close to the 4age weight as is possible.

I know a v6 swap is possible… heres a guy who has done it on his corolla:

Was thinking of these lines of engine (toyota GR engines) since they are aluminium block and weigh between 160 to about 180kgs

Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have quite a bit of knowledge on customizing cars but my two cents all the same:

I think engine weight and torque matches tensile and compression strength of car parts: chassis, hubs, wheel studs, bearings, coil springs, shocks, axles, control arms drive shafts/propeller shafts (in short a suspension and drive train). Parts are enginered considering such things. That is why a mercedes w124 320 and w124 500 have a different wheel base measurement, even though they are both e class cars of the same generation.

If two guys hit a pothole, one with four 13.5mm nominal diameter studs per wheel and the engine weight is 200 kg and the other hits the same pothole with five 15.5 mm studs per wheels with same engine weight, the effect on the wheels is not the same.

I think a simple place to start is count the number and size of studs in the cars one wishes to transplant/swop engines between and progress to bearing size and load ratings etc.

Thanks for pointing this out. This is something else I should actually consider. I think that since this is a project car that I will probably only use on the weekends, I could take the chance of swapping in the v6 with the current setup and see how it reacts

The 4age puts out about 160hp and 16.5 kg⋅m. There was a supercharged one that put out about 180hp and 210 N⋅m of torque. I was thinking of trying something like the 3GR-FE since this sounds reasonably powerful in my opinion (228hp) and compared to the supercharged 4age, it adds about 50hp so my take is that the car should handle it as this is a modest gain. Also, the 3GR-FSE could be ok. Remember its not a daily driver so I guess I can experiment with it. The other parts that you mention like studs can also be swapped out at a later date and anything else that seems like it cant handle this

Good luck with the mods just dont blow up on Thika Rd

to restore the car buy new same engine and the most important buy new gearbox, . no mods needed all lost HP will be back no heavy mods needed.

One reason I thought of doing the mod is that I cant find that engine locally. Production of 4age engines ceased in 1998 so getting an ex-japan one is proving difficult. If anyone knows any good engine importers locally perhaps you can give me a shout out.

The successor engine for the 4age is the 2zzge but this isnt a direct bolt on and mods will need to be done anyway. Also, 2zzge is quite rare. I thought if I have to swap in a different engine might as well look for a light, all aluminium v6 that is common here in Kenya. The GR series seems to fit the bill as they are common in stuff like Mark x among others and they are light (2gr-fe weighs 163kg which is just 9kgs more than my current engine and is used in quite a number of cars so spares should be a no-brainer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine#2GR-FE ).

achana na horsepower. torque ndio huwa inaharibu gari. The problem will usually be the suspension and brakes. You will have to get bigger wheels, bigger discs and pads, probably longer springs.

Ni kweli. Hio ni sound advice about the torque and I know that the torque is likely to degrade my current suspension parts alot faster. But since its a project car, am willing to take the risk.

Pads, and bigger suspensions am willing to change in time. Right my main issue is getting the engine, puting it in the car and modifying transmission, driveshafts etc and basically having a car that moves. After that, pole pole I will modify other parts.

Hey… Did you go ahead with this swap? I am importing a silver top engine to mod into another car…non toyota actually

No… I decided to try to overhaul first. I will probably swap it a few years down the line since it isnt a daily driver

Tuchanue hii project you might help someone who is almost changing a car to be chicken coop.

I will be dropping it into this pug 309. I had gotten a pug 306gti engine that proved to be a money pit so i put back the original engine Xu5 as its my daily car… So just recently purchased a 4age silvertop. Its coming complete with gear ecu harness drive shafts and mountings as i intend to swap everything. Then see how it goes.

Sawasawa. You have a garage familiar with this engines?

There are guys who have worked on my engine for like 10yrs in Dago. Also witnessed them overhauling a blacktop and replacing another blacktop so they are competent.

However, havent seen them do a 4age swap though I think they have done a 5afe swap into a peugeot partner. I can inbox you the guys number if interested.

Btw, I’d luv to know which website you purchased it from…

Yeah would definitely appreciate the contact. I got the engine from Auto perfotmance parts ea https://m.facebook.com/Auto-Performance-Parts-Ea-366112550083527/?notif_t=page_fan&notif_id=1546635446694413&ref=m_notif&sw_fnr_id=2952588842&fnr_t=0 they are shipping it from Dubai

3sgte isn’t a bad option and it give descent power… Are you selling the 4age

Hi have got a Mitsubishi old model like the one on my fb profile which is 2600 CC model is 4G54 JX can swap with which engine with less consumption or which diesel engine to swap this one will appreciate your feedback
