Newly elected Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba has made an about turn to her controversial rejection of a proposed pay cut for MPs. The MP had on Wednesday appeared on a talk show on NTV where she insisted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) should slash salaries well, adding ” I want to be paid well. I want to be honoured for who I am.” The remarks prompted a section of Kiambu residents to start signing a petition to stop her from being sworn in. On Thursday morning, an apologetic Gathoni wa Muchomba appeared on Citizen TV where she said that she will now accept any decision that will be made by the SRC and the Parliamentary Service Commission on MPs pay. “About the salary increment, I think there is so much hullabaloo about probably what I said yesterday was not in line with what my people expected. And I did not intend to take that direction. So anything to do with salaries discussions in parliament, for me whatever will be decided and delivered to us, I will gladly and humbly accept it and move on,” said Gathoni wa Muchomba.

One thing I admire about Kiambu - their leaders fear the people. I am optimistic this civic awareness will spread throughout the country and people rein in their elected leaders with a short leash.

while she’s apologised, she has through the backdoor, accepted “what will be delivered to us”
in other words, she won’t fight an increase. and she won’t loudly accept what she gets.
