I never suggest anyone go with a new phone unless you are a show off freak. The companies stopped producing phones without issues ages ago. I don’t know if they are really testing the phones before releasing them. Also, the entire thing depends on how you use the phone.

Older flagships are always better, Except if you do very old (ancient) ones. But please consider not using the 3-year + old variant phones. Because they might not be supporting some applications which may require some specific hardware. Again this is purely on your usage requirement.

Also if you come from a flagship you cannot use the new mid-range phone peacefully. (experience) I was using Oneplus 5 and Now I am using Asus Zenfone M1 Max Pro. I feel bad about using my present phone in comparison to my previous phone all the time.

I have a seven-year old samsung I gave-up on a long time ago. Seems like our union is until death. Nothing wants to happen to this phone.

This opinion holds for someone who doesn’t want a fast new phone. I transitioned from a three year phone and the difference is very noticeable.
I suggest if you can afford it, you should be holding a late 2017/2018 phone. The speeds are very good.

My Huawei P8 still works fine and I get regular updates

Get a new budget phone. A samsung S3 ama iphone 5 ukinipea sahizi sichukui

I prefer old flagship coz it will be cheaper (probably refurb) and u find tones of ported roms on Xda
