ANIME AND MANGA

Any weebs and fans of the anime/manga genre in this mbeach? I have just discovered them during the lockdown. I don’t want to say they are overrated but so far most have failed to catch my interest beyond the first few episodes. Obviously I am just a beginner at this phase. So far I have watched and enjoyed:

Cowboy BeBop
Samurai X
Mobile Suit Gundam

On the future watchlist are:
My Superhero Academia
Naruto
Bleach
One Piece
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (this one came highly recommended).

Any suggestions from veterans? Detailed descriptions are most welcome. I want to know if what I’ll be watching will be worth my while.

It seems you have a taste for the old school animes of the 80s and 90s like me. My recommendations are:

Akira-This one is a classic cyberpunk anime although it’s not that action packed, more of a philosophical dystopian hot-take on society

Berserk (1997)- the best anime ever made IMO. Don’t want to spoil the plot just watch it. You’ll thank me later

Hokuto No Ken aka Fist of the North Star-Nice over the top machismo you will never find in modern anime

Ninja Scroll-Badass samurai action

Afro Samurai- Samuel L. Jackson in a movie about a black samurai. Nuff said

Cyber City Oedo 808-another cult classic about prisoners being recruited into the police in exchange for reduced sentences. Suicide Squad copied their plot (poorly) in the film. The comics are way better.

Nice, I’ll be sure to check them out. Tell me, are the shows I’ve put on my watchlist worth it? I look at most modern anime and it seems like cookie cutter BS to me. Just overly colourful harem BS. And some of it honestly should be illegal.

Lol, I assume you’re talking about lolicon and shotacon. I also wonder how such content can be legal in Japan where so much of their culture is about honour, nobility and morality but it is what it is. I agree most modern anime is crap. Crappy romantic storylines with a million love interests. But there are still good ones like Baki, Goblin Slayer, One Piece, Naruto, the Dragon Ball series and others. It also depends on your tastes. You will soon find out that there are very many different types of anime and manga that cater to different audiences and their tastes. The hypermasculine, gritty, mature cyberpunk stuff mostly ended in the 90s but quality content with mature storylines still exist. Only you have to sift through all the generic content to get to the good stuff.

As for the shows on your watchlist, like I said it depends on your tastes. JoJo’s is overrated IMHO, they just have a huge following online especially when it comes to the memes. In that sense they are like K-pop fans. Doesn’t really mean the music is good. Naruto, Bleach and One Piece are very, very, very long shows so be prepared to be following the story for a while. My Hero Academia I really don’t know, I’ve never bothered watching it but the plot is basically like the movie Sky High.

Here is my list

  1. Death note
  2. Attack on Titan

So, if you want to think a little while watching anime, then I advise you to watch the death note, code geass (all seasons), as well as no game - no life. In these anime, the plot is thought out to the smallest detail. If you want to watch anime about demons or just anime with a very strong main character, then you can watch One-Punch Man, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, black clover, Beelzebub (by the way, a very cool comedy), as well as Nanatsu no Taizai … There is also an anime just with a very cool story like Fullmetal Alchemist, Violet Evergarden, Yakusoku no Neverland, as well as Noragami. Happy viewing! I usually watch all anime in English dub at https://ww5.dubbedanime.net/browse-anime . I will be glad if you share the services that you use. Thank you in advance.
