Why would you total the balance ? Iv never heard of " sum of all balances to be xx" but I always hear " sum of all spending to be xx".

Get this statement clear in your head and think about the following:
There is no reason why the sum of the sequentially diminishing balance amounts should total the original amount.
It’s a pretty good mind trick for anyone who ASSUMES the asker has valid grounds for questions they ask. Reminds me of wrongly set questions in exams that send you seeking for answers that aren’t what the examiner thinks they are.
