Bad clients

How do you deal with clients who refuse to pay after you complete the job.? I’ve lost all the wisdom to deal with him.

You hold payments in escrow, with mediation parties.

Treat your job as a profession

  1. Consultation fee ( filters out jokers)
  2. 75% down-payment before kazi
  3. 25% on finalizing project/ job

Next client demand 50% upfront, niliteswa na clients hadi nikaingia employment…my mistake was not having a signed contract with them.Gentleman agreement is a nooo

The final payment should be a by the way payment that you will comfortably lose without eating your profits

Talk small…bagger

Always Demand 25% charge to start the job. Usually tell the client this is for material. Hata Kama ni IT, inform it’s for licenses for software use. Once quarter of the work is done, take another 25%. Just remember if a client cannot pay you 25%, he will never pay 100%. This is universal.

  1. Write a contract and ensure the client reads it and signs it. Gentleman agreement is a a NO hata kama ni morio. Biashara haijui morio.
  2. Request for a 50% downpayment. This is to gauge if the client is serious and able to pay. If he cant be able to pay 50% downpayment he wont be able the whole of it.
  3. Ensure the payment is through the bank to leave a paper trail incase things go haywire.

Story of my life. I do consultancies, started off as a side hustle and now my full time job. Up to now, I think ile pesa zangu clients wametoroka nayo ni USD 3000. Tips I use:

1.Always have a contract and an evidence track. WhatsApp, mpesa, emails etc. Contract is not always foolproof though, there was a client alikuwa amekataa kulipa even though we had a contract. I had to threaten him with KRA ndio akalipa

  1. Charge the most, upto 75% upfront. I do research, data analysis and reporting. For research and data analysis peke yake I make sure at least 80‰ imeingia. 20% ni ya revisions, hiyo hata wakihepa nayo it does not sting too much.

  2. Be careful with new clients. I don’t take clients kiholela. I do my due diligence mainly through FB and LinkedIn. Don’t be afraid to inbox current employees, current or former consultants. You’d be surprised how much people are willing to share especially if they’ve been conned. If you feel ni client sumbua don’t be afraid to charge the highest price.

  3. It’s better to register a company than be an individual consultant. Some clients take you more seriously if they are dealing with a consulting company.

  4. Companies are better than individuals. I do 90% firms, 10% individuals. NGOs are the best in my experience as often they just want good work. If you deliver quality work, they will keep you in the pipeline and you will always get work from them. Aim for this.

  5. Always deliver quality work. Truth is, most people deliver OK work, very few deliver great work. That way good clients keep you and refer you to others, and you don’t have to go looking for new clients whom you don’t have a history with.

Summary: avoid new clients esp if you haven’t done your due diligence. Charge the most upfront. Deliver quality work and clients will follow you.

Hivyo sasa.
