That’s not entirely true…relax! Her heart is still intact and inside of her. She’s carrying what looks like an old version, LVAD (left ventricular assist device), and how it’s implanted is by dissecting a small portion of the heart (the left ventricular apex) for insertion of the inflow cannula while the outflow cannula is grafted into the ascending aorta. Heart pump assist devices are implanted with two major end points in mind: as “destination therapy” for those who are not eligible for a heart transplant or if there’s a possibility their heart function will improve over time. LVAD’s are also inserted as “bridge therapy” as these very sick patients wait for a heart transplant.
