Biopsy

Have you ever done something that made all your family and friends mad at you and sad at the same time? Have you ever seen guys react in a way you didn’t expect them to coz they love you and are so much concerned about you, well, Meria alishawai jiingiza mahali kaa hapo na karibu ndugu na marafiki waniue juu ya kukasirika, ungethania nimeuza shamba ya family bei ya kupeana vile walikua wananicheki. Maybe what I had done was wrong, maybe ……???, Lets start from the beginning you be the judge too.

Early one December in 2003 nikiwa kwa kinyozi ndio nilistuka after kujiangalia kwa kioo na kuona kalump/tumour kaliokua just above the collar bone on the left side kamekua kakubwa size ya golf ball, kusema ukweli hii lump nilikua naiskia nikioga lakini naipuzilia coz sikuthania ni serious but what I saw that day in the mirror made my heart skip a beat. Probably ningekua na kioo kwangu ningekua nimeiona vizuri na haingenistua sana but mimi na vioo mpaka leo hatupatani juu sura yangu ilitolewa the same store naya ya Besigye na Eugene Wamalwa. (but am not complaining, slice givers are attracted to ugly guys)

Like most people ukiwa na kitu haiumi you don’t get worried at all, I thought ni just a passing cloud itaisha tu yenyewe, but this was not to be, kila asubuhi nakaskiza vile kako and during my weekly shave naiangalia kwa kioo and by late December the lump was the size of a tennis ball and it was still growing, niliruka mwaka bila raha yeyote na kurudi job in Jan where I was overwhelmed by the workload (2004 Jan all PSVs and trucks had to be fitted with speed gafanas and seatbelts, muarabu wangu alikua authorized dealer navile wakenya ni watu wa last minute you can guess the rush that was there, the gava had to extend the deadline by thate days) nikaisahau kidogo but as soon as I got a replieve by midmonth nikakimbia kwa the local @Luther12 hapo mtaani na alinistua sana wakati alivaa gloves kunikagua, I felt dirty. The local doc after his examination referred me to a major private hosp where I should go for further tests. Mimi nikazileki tu na hatimaye end of Jan ndio nilienda.

The doc I had been referred to alikagua lump yangu which was now the size of a watermelon, infact ilikua inaniforce kuvaa ma pulllnecks zile zina shingo ndefu ili watu wasi inotice, after kififinyafinya pia na groves akasema hawezi jua ni nini till afanye biopsy. Nikaamka kwa kale ka kitanda ka doc nikamuuliza whats a biopsy? Akanishow lazima akate hio lump atoe kipiece kidogo apeleke lab iwe analysed vizuri ndio ugonjwa upatikane. Kamwambia “siukate saa hii” akacheka hadi machozi ikatoka. He told me that its an operation that had to be done in the minor theatre, he then took his diary, flipped a few pages and settled on 4th of Feb, he asked if I can avail myself that morning by 8 for the minor operation of removing the “small meat”, without much thought Meria akakubali na hapo ndipo alipiga simu aka book theatre.

Kurudi home I stayed mum, didn’t tell anyone of the impending operation, afterall it was minor, the surgeon had said ni kitu kaa ya dakika twedi hivi so on that Wednesday morning niko job kaa kawa nikamshow muarabu letter of appointment akanipea ruhusa, kisha vile ilikua siendi kukaa akasema nichukue canter ambaye imewekwa governor saa hio nikaitest kibarani alafu niende hosi nayo. Kibarani is the only place near the island unawes fika speed ya 80kph and above. After lap mbili pale na ku confirm governor iko poa mimi huyoo nikajipeleka hosi, kapark canter vipoa kisha nikaingia ndani. Time was 9:30.

I was taken to a waiting room pale tulikua watu watatu pekee na nikajipea shugli na magazines za Lancet Journal, daktali wangu alikuja around 10am akiwa maspeedy speedy akanishow kuna kaemergency flani niendelee kusubili. Boss alipopiga simu kamuambia niko next in line kuona doc. Kitu 11 hivi while I was deeply engrossed in a mag nikaskia a very sweet voice calling me, by saa hio tulikua watu wengi waiting room na niliskia “Meria, Meria, please follow me” kuangalia nikaona ka nurse, kafupi kindu 5ft 5inches na kalikua kameiva kabisa, hio uniform yake ilikua imemshika nikaa a second skin, nikiwa nyuma yake couldn’t help noticing the pantyline, hio haga ilikua imejaa kwa hio thuruari vipoa sana, had to stop my hand ikienda kugusa, mara hio hio akafungua mlango moja hapo akanishow niingie, akanifuata ndani akanisho a bathroom with just a curtain for a door and told me I have to take a shower.

That was just the opening I needed to start a conversation, (a fisi never fails to grab any opportunity, afadhali ujaribu ushindwe kuliko uishi na regrets eti I wish I tried) I told her to please help me undo my belt and untie my shoe laces as my fingers were numb, she looked at me with an amused expression and I held up my hand, ustake ona vile nilikua nimekunja vidole za mkono ya right. I continued without being prompted and told her I had woken up feeling numb couldn’t unfold my fingers hence the operation, she dutifully obliged and helped me undress, she even helped me turn on the tap in the shower, after the shower she handed me a towel nikajikausha kisha nikajifunga nikatoka ndani ya hio cubicle, couldn’t see my clothes anywhere even my phone had disappeared and in place she held out an apron, (if that’s how you call it) a green hosp gown ingine hapo unavaa backwards, yaani mbele inakua ndio nyuma alafu inafungwa tu na tukamba, haikua na buttons, the lovely nurse helped me put it on while all the time we were having an animated conversation then she magically produced a wheel chair from nowhere nikaambiwa niketie, she wheeled me to an office where alinitoa damu kidogo kwa elbow then she gave me a form to sign, kuuliza ni ya nini kaambiwa ni consent for surgery.

No sooner had I signed than two well built gentlemen appeared on the door rolling a stretcher, hapo ndipo niliskia uwoga for the first time. Nikaambiwa nipande kwa hio kitu which I did alafu nikalala nikaangalia ceiling, as I was being wheeled to the theatre all I could see were the two gentlemen and florescent lights flashing by, kabra tuingie kwa theatre the nurse appeared and told me “all the best Meria, Naona vidole zishakunjuka”, couldn’t help smilling as I was pushed into a very bright room, hii ilibidi niketi niangalie vizuri. Ngai mwathani, hapa ndipo. My heart started beating at a very fast rate, kusema ukweli I was scared but there was no turning back, one remarkable thing about this minor theatre is that there were a lot of wall clocks, like 10 of them, kila mahali ulipokua ukiangalia ni saa tu and then smack in the middle of the room was a huge robotic arm with powerful lights na hapa ndipo nilipelekwa, kulikua na several monitors which and a humming sound coming from I don’t know which machine, as the two guys were preparing me for surgery the doc walked in tukaanza small talk, about this and that na kumuangalia he seemed very confident na nikaacha wasiwasi as I was hooked up to the monitors, kwa vidole niliwekwa sensor zinakaa kama pegs and on my head and chest zingine ndogo za round with wires going into the machine.

The doc said it was now time, akaniambia nitadungwa shindano ya kuzuia uchungu during the operation kamuuliza mbona nisilale kabisa akasema its just a minor operation. Nikapigwa mashindano kadhaa hapo around the neck na jamaa nilikuja kujua baadaye huitwa anaesthesist, nikaambiwa huyu huyu myamaa ndiye atakua anamonitor the vital signs during the op. apart from the head and the area to be operated on the rest of the body was covered, baada ya dakika kidogo jamaa gave a sign that they could proceed hapo ndipo niliona daktali amefunikwa mdomo na ile mouth cover, the others were already covered, alafu akaitisha tools which alipewa in a kasmall stainless steel tray, akainua scalpel juu nikaiona alafu akasema nikiskia uchungu niseme. I looked at one of the the clocks the time was 11:30.
