Can't we have our own Miracle on the 'Tana' River?

One of the World’s wealthiest countries today used to be one of the poorest.

[li]This country was oppressed by a foreign colonial ruler.[/li][li]This country was devastated by war, a war that nearly destroyed the country.[/li][li]This country has had two different military coupes in the last 60 years, and has only been a democracy for just 30 years.[/li][li]This country just hosted the Olympics for the 2nd time.[/li][/ul]
What country am I talking about?

People used to greet each other by asking, “Have you eaten today?”

I’m talking about South Korea. This was what the country used to look like after the Korean War. The life expectancy was just over 50 years old. Major cities were completely destroyed, and people struggled to feed their families.

In the decades after the war South Korea’s economy skyrocketed, during a period which is often referred to as the “Miracle on the Han.”

Now South Korea is one of the richest countries in the world, with 11th largest economy by nominal GDP. Seoul is one of the biggest and prosperous cities in the world.

Seoul has the 4th largest metropolitan economy in the world behind Tokyo, New York, and LA.

South Korea is now one of the most technology advanced countries in the world. Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia are all extremely successful Korean companies. Korea has some of the fastest and most efficient train and metro systems in the world.

KTX, Korea’s modern trains system, travels at speeds 305km/h or 190mph!

Korea ranks above the US in life expectancy, and education, and has far cheaper health care. South Korea has the fastest internet speeds in the world, and the Seoul subway system is one of the most efficient in the world. It makes Washington DC’s subway system look like a bad joke.

Korea’s rapid economic growth helped transform it from one of the world’s poorest countries to the economic powerhouse that it is today.

Can’t we have our own Miracle on the ‘Tana’ River?

Two words: Galana Kalalu.

Korea as a nation has been in existence since 1392. It has also had one ethnicity since around that time i.e Koreans who speak one language, have one culture and similar traditions.

Kenya in comparison has existed since 1888 when the British started building the railway. Since independence in 1963, Kenya has failed to build any semblance of national unity. The best evidence of this was the disastrous Sessional Paper no 10 of 1965 which pretty much killed any hope of national unity this nation could have hoped to have.

Korea also received an economic stimulus during the Cold War from the US through massive aid. And it still does up to today. Kenya has had none of that same luck. Not that it would matter, we all know where that aid would have ended up.

riwe riwaro, shait!

We shall get there too someday!

I can actually visualize “The miracle on Kimwarer River”.

Study South Korea industrial revolution then comment in full. As a front line usa alley in the cold war with USSR they got over $1 billion funding annually from the 50’s to present to develop. They developed due to usa funding and their own work ethic. Imagine $1 billion every year in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s etc. What will you not have built. Roads, ports, airports, water dams, pipes, sewerage, power plant, power transmission lines, housing, cities, industrial plants etc. They owe Uncle Sam a lot of gratitude. Their industry grew from nothing to rudimentary thanks to cooperation of corporate america inc and become global players in their own right.

You missed the word NOT buddy

From the evidence I produce we can see that between 1980 - 2000 Korea received an average FDI of USD 1.945 billion dollars while Kenya received only USD 22 million per year.
This is almost 90 times what Kenya got in the same period.
Give Kenya 10 times the FDI South Korea currently gets and see how fast we become first world.

Informative thread, now will read about Korea

:D:D:D:D

You guys are really schooling the low IQ baboons who like to paraphrase Babuon eti Kenya and South Korea were at the same level in 1963 but that corruption made Kenya lose out. Korea is a homogenous state that has been in ecistence for the last 700years. Its people even had their own script and industrial base as far back as 1800. You could go on and on, but the fact is that comparing SK and KE is plain stupid…

Mobius si ni ya india?

with such lack of creativity in these tech years…no miracle herehttps://pbs.twimg.com/media/D1DKvPjWsAESSVs.jpg

If the Sameer Industrial Park is in India, then I know nothing…

What I like most about South Korea is their no nonsense attitude towards corruption. The last female president is in jail. Why? She allowed a friend access to state speeches among other things…

@spear we destroy and steal from ourselves, we rush to aid any external interests who want to plunder and dump in our territory, in doing so we turned against our own future; we have no mercy for our own that is why we cannot reach the height of South Korea. We have to love one another, conquer the tribal bias and hate, and seek a good outcome for each other.

Kenya has remained allied to the West. The South Koreans developed because they put the money into the development projects, corruption didn’t impede there thinking, they developed and enhanced local skills and talent to maintain the momentum of their development.
It is possible to get £1, 2 ….5billion annually and squander it. That one billion would still have been stolen ending up in offshore foreign accounts. If we had put all our money into the right places we could only be a few steps behind S Korea.

There was a time when Kenya’s crop was fetching good prices, when we were building a healthy surplus account, we were surplus producer of sugar, rice etc, before we destroyed the ADC farms. Galana Tana land perhaps could be turned into an ADC farm, reinstate the skills of large farm management that we destroyed. Lease some of that land to local farmers to supply to the large farm which could have the processing plant.
