CHOOSE PEACE

I got a baby girl this year. She doesn’t know much yet. She can’t talk or eat yet but she can see and hear. I talk to her about a lot of things. All good things. I tell her about her aunt Mercy who’s a teacher in Garrisa and how we going visit her. I tell her of how hot the place is and when we go, we shall put a bowl of water out in the open and see it evaporate. I tell her there are 3 cities in Kenya and she will visit them all. She going skate in Nairobi hoping Humphries Wright Hamiz won’t be too old to teach her. Go fishing in Kisumu with Michael Jerry Mcmende and collect sea shells in Mombasa. I tell her of Mumias. A land full of sugarcane plantations that Mumelo Duncan won’t shut up about. If she’s lucky she will get to go to Embu too. See cows plough and chase Kabiru Karanja dirtfying his fancy suit. She will see pishori grow in Mwea on her way to Meru. G-Boy Babji will sing for her all to matoke land where Patty Terryson Rogito will Cook her matoke. We shall go to Kajiado and play Masai dress up. I bet this will be soo much fun. I want her to taste the sweet honey of Kilifi. I hope she gets to enjoy every single part of Kenya. I hope she gets to see all the diverse cultural practices that Kenya holds. She doesn’t know what politics is. She doesn’t even know how or why people vote. If you choose violence instead of peace the politician will flee unharmed. They will go on enjoying their wealth and only watching CNN to see how many Kenyans are still alive. Guess who will suffer, my little baby girl. She might die, I might die and she will grow up motherless. We might fall when fleeing and she becomes paralysed for ever. Yes that’s what a small act like throwing a stone can amount to. I want to have a future with no memories of post election violence. I want my daughter to grow appreciating the diversity of our cultures. It should be enough that our fore fathers died for our freedom. We don’t have to maintain it through bloodshed.

That baby turned you into a poet or what? Congrats…

Haha no and thank you!
