Coolant change

Hello guys, its that time to change or add coolant and am worried not to mess the radiator with fake or bad coolant replacement. Please guys take me through all this nisimess gari. Coz fundi watamwaga tu anything bora ikue full.

Is it time to add or change ? Which is which ?

You don’t need a mech to add coolant. But as Kahuni Maisha has asked, una change ama unaongeza?

Na add coz it has reduced to its low levels so if its reccommended to add i need the original or a good one nisimess. So nataka kuongezea tu basi asanteni.

How often do you change coolant?

Kubadilisha coolant ni kama Tu kukojoa. You don’t need a mechanic to help you and you can do it whenever you wish. Just start the engine and open the top radiator cap kifuniko at the bottom of the radiator. Let the old coolant run out completely. Wash with cold fresh water until dry. Close the cap tightly. Switch off engine and pour in the new coolant until you see it full on the top radiator cap.

Kuna radiator mingi hazina hio “kifuniko” ya chini. It’s called a drain cork. So what he needs to do is the following.

If he’s had the system flushed recently, and topped with coolant, then all that needs to be done is to top up the coolant with the same brand of coolant that was used.

If not…

  1. Disconnect the top and bottom hose pipes from the radiator.
  2. Insert a hose pipe with well pressured water in the lower hose pipe.
  3. Start the engine and let it run as you try cover the lower hose pipe with your hand. The water will circulate inside the engine and get ejected from the top hose pipe.
  4. Once the water clears (no residue of old coolant or corrosion), stop the engine from running.
  5. Reconnect the lower hose pipe and direct the hose with water to the top of the radiator. Best if you keep the radiator cap on and use the inlet of the radiator. Restart the engine and let it run until the water clears. This will flush the radiator.
  6. Stop the engine. Reconnect the top hose pipe and pour in the coolant. Add water gradually and once full, replace the radiator cap. Start the engine, rev it for a few minutes and re open the radiator cap to see the water level. You’ll find that you most probably will have to top up. Top up and secure the radiator cap.

If your radiator uses the grip hose clips instead of the screw ones, make sure that you have a set of four to replace. Many at times the former do not retain their grip after being taken out and this can cause slow but steady leakage.

However, if your car has a thermostat, let this be done by professionals as it will require what is termed as “bleeding”. Which if not done can cause your engine to overheat very fast.
