Data Science

Wana kijiji, what do you think about the above?

Is there any of the above that exist in Kenya?

It’s unclear whether you are asking about the course or profession. Nonetheless, data science is here with us.

I believe you need not to have a special degree to switch to data science - with a master’s you should be fine. However, you need to have a very strong statistical background and you can at least work with R and of course you have to be the curious kind. That’s just for a start. Try your mastery pale kaggle

Do kenyans generate data? If the answer is yes then go for it

Kaggle…Interesting. Ebu niambie kama uko kwa hiyo profession. I am asking about the both. Nimeona the only course offered in Kenya in M.Sc in Data Analytics pale KCA. If you know of a place, let me know.

Brathe…Just signed up for Kaggle. Nimepata kitu ya kufanya for the next 32 weeks.

As a profession kuna many data scientists ubaya ni nowadays people call their data engineers ati data scientists. As a course sahau hapa, all the data scientists walisomea pale ngambo. Kaggle haiezi kufanya ukuwe data scientist.

Kaggle is just a place to practice your skills

Data Science has been there only that it has taken a wider angle and approach due to advances in tech. Can be approached from a software point of view where developers can manipulate data programmatically or the statistician approach. So yeah companies like datascience.co.ke are doing it in full-scale approach from a software engineering point of view and offer training on the same. Safaricons too are doing lots of data mining and using the same for datascience purposes. The iHub used to have the iHub Data Science Lab which also trained and did lots of analysis. Not sure if it’s still operational as of iHub 2.0

Python does the trick as well.

Its more about collecting data than generating it…and it is mostly limited to the banking and insurance sector.

Data science in Kenya would be a niche profession and i would definately not suggest anybody to try and specialise in it at an undergrad level. Maybe a doctorate level.

For the op… @kennchester i would suggest you go with the wider profession of software programming wqchana na data science for now!

Exactly

Data science is not just about freaking python…just because you know python…you think you are now a data scientist!? HA!

You are just some arrogant dumbass who goofs into every post ready to post on the offensive. Learn some keyboard manners and aim your shots where they count you scoundrel. The ‘as well’ part should have struck a chord in your clueless brain you Google-bred half-baked scum of a developer. @Shamsudin talked of R and I quipped that Python can do the trick as well. But again, how would you know anyway?

Jesus christ! This is an ignorant statement

:D:D it seems uko na phd ya matusi pia…perhaps it comes with python ‘as well’? Stick around…you can learn a thing or two!

Where is the ignorance? Do you claim to know everything when it comes to computers? Are you a data scientist?

First, what is data? and what is data science?
2nd, you claim it’s mostly limited to banking and insurance, are these the only institutions that generate data daily? If I give you a dataset of ktalk you wont analyse it because it’s not from the banking sector?

Here are the competitions on Kaggle, how many are from the banking and insurance sector? https://www.kaggle.com/competitions

from this you can see that data is everywhere, their analysis help us uncover hidden insights that can help us improve on whatever we are doing. What most Kenyan companies need is awareness.

Let’s move to the phd claim, since when was phd in data science a requirement?

No 2 on Kaggle has an electronics engineer with a M.S. in telecommunications, he self taught himself, won a couple of competiions and Airbnb hired him https://www.wired.com/story/solve-these-tough-data-problems-and-watch-job-offers-roll-in/
http://drivendata.co/blog/countable-care-interview-gilberto-titericz-jr/
kuna many more including a 17-year-old boy. The point is, you don’t need phd to start out, as long as you understand the math then you can learn and become one if you put in the effort. Also, you don’t need to target Kenyan companies, you can work remotely for other companies as long as you can prove your skills, that wired article gives you a perfect example

Mimi I just work on some problems for fun since I am currently working on a project in a related field. Also, Kaggle is not an authority but just a site to learn from how others solve problems and improve your skills. real-world problems involve lots of data cleaning and preparation before you even begin the analysis

Thats why i said it would be a niche profession here in kenya…the context was this country. The dataset from ktalk is too little for it to have any big data impact.

ohhh so how big should data be to be analysed?

Assuming ktalk gets 500k page views in a week, wont you want to know what pages they are viewing, what topics mostly interest them, ratio of men to women, the countries they are from, what devices they are using, the source of the traffic? all these you can use to help you understand the site and improve the site experience. Ama what kind of data do you nee?

Cmon deorro You dont need a data scientist for that…and it has already been done for you!
