ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Anybody here studied electrical engineering? What are you doing now? Did you get a 1st, an upper, a lower or (gasp) a pass?

I got a pass in BA and I employ several electricals

I know a number of my school mates at Moi Uni, 90% are not happy with what they are doing, totally different from what they studied.
Am a Conductor B.Eng, MSc.

Electricals?

My hubby got a first class in EE. He currently works at a software company, but is in the process of switching to a whole new career.

Fun fact Engineers make most billionaires when they switch to business/entreprenuership.

Did Bsc Electrical & Electronics, Currently doing freelance consulting for small clients on the side but my main focus is in Entrepreneurship.

True. Its the dominant profession of most billionaires and their directors pale kwa Forbes Index & Fortune 500.

Electrical is not flexible as other engineering majors… labda uhamie US ama Australia… Moi avenue most clothes stores are run by Elec graduates

Interesting… being in software myself, it would be interesting to know what he is switching too if you dont mind my asking…

Didn’t telecommunications, computer science and electronics were all derived from electrical engineering.
Advance in any of the above, and you find yourself studying electrical.

Wow! truly inspiring. I was only asking because I’m about to graduate, just saw my results for the first time in two years. My hopes for an upper have been crushed and I may end up getting a lower depending on how this semester goes.

He’s actually planning to specialize in medicine. Yes, the time investment is huge but he’s young and we believe it’s worth it. Engineering is kinda tricky because unless you go into high levels of administration or R&D, there’s a risk of reaching career plateau quite early.

So what is the work space(industry) like? Did you start out as an entrepreneur or did you get a job first? I personally wouldn’t mind working for an organization for a few years, gaining a little experience and then transitioning into my own private venture(s).

Wow! What a risk taker! I guess it’s never too late to do anything huh? Why does he feel the need to change professions though?

Why not?

You should never feel married to one career. It is never too late to change fields.

Hakuna course useless Kenya kama any Engineering degree. Take it from me, you will never go beyond being a mere graduate engineer. 99.9% of all meaningful projects in kenya are handed to foreign companies with their own labor force because our greedy politicians/CS want kickbacks. One of my uni lecturers never shied away from exposing the rot at the ministry of energy and EBK/ERB when i was in jkuat.

So in your case, you’re left with the option of scouring for employment from govt parastatals like Ketraco, kengen and kplc or private firms. Kazi utapata ndio (mostly on contractual basis for just maintenance) , but utalipwa kama punda tu. Better start thinking ahead saa hii, ama utajipata ume tamarc for 3 years only to land a gig paying 40k per month. Otherwise, welcome to postgraduate kenya!

Well… Thanks. Are you an engineering graduate yourself? What have you done or do you do right now?

Exactly the problem, the pay is low and chances of upward mobility are slim. Bright people have been reduced to near-poverty in kenya’s unjust economy.

Yes, i graduated with an upper of electrical and electronics eng. The good thing about mimi nilifunguka macho nikiwa 3rd year so i started developing an e-commerce platform dealing in dropshipping electrical-based goods. Thinking of venturing in local consultancy late this year.

Most of my campus buddies are either struggling in lowly paid dead-end jobs or still seriously tarmacking. Very very sad. Mimi sijawahi na sitawahi tafuta kazi in this jubilee-madness economy.
