Ethiopian prime minister

Reports reaching MeriaMata News Network indicate that the Ethiopian premier Hailemariam Desalegn has just submitted his resignation letter. This also follows the recent US intelligence report warning that Ethiopia and Kenya will continue facing political instability in 2018 as their respective opposition seek redress for grievances. A new dawn for our neighbor?

Naona jana they released political prisoners mostly journalists and politicians, one had been in jail for 7yrs. Hii pressure ni internal or from outside?

Ethiopia’s prime minister says he has submitted his resignation as both prime minister and the chairman of the ruling coalition.

Hailemariam Desalegn’s announcement comes amid a political crisis and lingering unrest in the Horn of Africa country, which has released thousands of prisoners to ease tensions.

Hundreds of people have died in violence sparked initially by an urban development plan for the capital Addis Ababa. The unrest spread in 2015 and 2016 as demonstrations against political restrictions and human rights abuses broke out.

“Unrest and a political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many,” Hailemariam said in a televised address to the nation.

“… I see my resignation as vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy,” he said.

Hailemariam said he would stay on as prime minister in a caretaker capacity until the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and the country’s parliament accepted his resignation and named a new premier.

LETA MBISHA ZA ILE NYOKA YA JANA UNKO

Heard from an Ethiopian that he was under siege fron strong remnremn from Zenawi. He also comes from a small tribe and it was difficult for him to fill the shoes.
Hope that giant doesn’t fall apart.

Forget that tag “usa intelligence report” its just stating the obvious and giving it a big name as a source.

I have very many sources and friends in Ethiopia. All their online footprint is very private due to the obvious. The country has been under constant strikes and uprising spontaneously erupting faster than they can quell it or cover it up. If it continues like this it would be bad. Ethiopian PM just left before it erupts. Another thing which doesn’t make sense is the foreign currency shortfalls in the country. @shocks It doesn’t make sense that a country under tight government economic control is lacking forex while it has been growing by over 7% a year for a decade. Their overstating of financial figures is been slowly exposed. Their economy isn’t as big as they claim. Right now they depend on Ethiopian airlines to bring in much needed forex as they fly passengers to connect at Bole airport. Their telecom revenue pays government salaries. Taxes pay for debt and projects. Its a delicate balance which can be easier if the start to free up the economy.

mr mkuki, how come they have the biggest African airline

Their treasury directly guarantees all the plane purchase which is like they buy it for them. If our Treasury quantees $ 1-2 billion loan from exim usa to buy 50 Boeing planes and proceeds to service it, then KQ would be bigger than them. Its only recently that government pumped in money to save KQ and hold back its creditors in 2017.

He is tigray like all other elites

Heavy government subsidies.

I don’t know why some governments don’t allow their currencies to free float. It just postpones a problem and in the meantime prevents investments. Sudan had to devalue it’s pound last month too

Ethiopia air is their biggest foreign exchange earner so they subsidize its operations. Then they pay below market rates in wages, Ethiopia hakuna union. About faking numbers we have been in agreement for some time.

I have to most of my time reviewed the Ethiopian economy and most of the points I would still not understand why the economy was seen as large as portrayed. Landlocked country with lesser export exits than us, something was not adding up. I guess the chicken have come home to roast.

I wish our brothers and sisters all the best. I admire them since they were not colonized and never lost their land to the evil schemes of the white man. Despite that they have a fairly modern society with all its rich culture (Amharic language-clothing-food) and systems are still in place. It ends the lie that colonialist were the only one who could develop Africa. However the civil war divided the nation and right now the ruling class needs to end it aloofness at the top. It was a mistake to lower wages to below Chinese workers to draw in FDI. Its a mistake to build infrastructure to serve industry first then people second instead of both at the same time.

Scenes like this are taking place all over Ethiopia.

They appreciate all the infrastructure and progress the country is making but they want more say and direct benefit to them as well. For example Ethiopia has the cheapest power in Africa in abundance. However only 23% of residents have power. Their government built the transmission lines not to spread the power to homes but to their industrial parks. Imagine all Geothermal power going to Industrial area Nairobi while Nakuru-Naivasha is still in darkness at night.

Actually, a fixed exchange rate system encourages investments.

No he’s a Wolayta, they are closely related to Oromo.
