Exploitation of interns in Kenya.

One of our greatest strengths as a country is our workforce/human resource and proprietors of some unscrupulous companies & organizations have realized that.
This is their drill:
In a company with 15 employees, for instance,10 are “graduate trainees/interns” earning between 15-25k while the other employees (the other 5) are earning double or triple that amount, yet the work is the SAME. However, these interns don’t work for long…mostly do a maximum of 6 months (compliance with labour laws).
Once they leave, new interns are brought in & the cycle continues. At the end, the company is able to save thousands in salaries yet accomplish its mission & objectives…It’s called PROFESSIONAL EXPLOITATION. Equity Bank Group launched it; the rest followed.

Totally wrong.

At least interns watapata experience ile inahitajika kwa hio kazi.

very rare to find institutions paying interns, usually they’re paid nothing. In fact I know quite a number who charges interns training fee.
Anyway this is a man eat man society…

Kwanza Insurance companies are the worst at exploiting fresh graduates!! I have had bad experiences with these guys, especially Britam…ghasia sana

This though i feel would be a very tough issue for the government to tackle. If they restrict the number of unemployed youth being taken as interns by a single company utaskia many hustlers watapiga Kelele venye serikali inawanyima riziki ata kama ni 15k.The best course of action would be to set up laws that compel companies to hire permanently 2 out of every say 6 interns that has worked for them but even then I believe most companies would just avoid hiring interns all together and look for other avenues to get their labour force. It’s a very tricky situation.Watu wavumilie tu while looking for better opportunities. Hii Kenya hakuna mtu atakuwekea chakula kwa mdomo.

walikufanyia nini kaka… hakuna kazi ngumu kama kujaribu kuuzia watu policies. you become like a beggar bumping into frustrated people in their offices…

wakiweka hiyo law then you’ll find many having 4 interns then towards the end they bring two more & the saddest thing those two who’ll come last will be the one who will be employed…

Haha look at it as a ratio ata if they higher 4 they would be obliged to permanently hire 1 at the end of the program but I hear you apo kwa preferential treatment. The system is broken.

self employment will eventually be the answer hii maneno ya kale ya wazazi wetu kutuambia tusome twandikwe tudrive is long gone focus on your childs talent mtoto asome lakini be keen na interest zake train him on hustle za family n other biz agrow akiwa na wide view asitegemee white collar jobs

Interns, trainees, pupils, articled clerks etc…need to shut the fuck up, humbly and quietly acknowledge to themselves that they don’t know shit [and that is why they are on training in the first place] acquire some professional discipline, LEARN relevant skills and lastly, be eternally fucking grateful to their benefactors for according them the opportunity to hone their skills and learn something.

Thereafter, once they acquire the relevant competencies, they can DEMAND [from clients and potential employers] to be paid all those millions they think they are entitled to now.

inhales and exhales slooowwwllly

Upewe kreti moja.

Always baffled by Kenyans’ sense of entitlement.

You either have the skills and are being hired for your skills or you are still learning and humble yourself like a student. Can’t have it both ways.

kwanza hotels utapata staff kama ¾ ni interns

Totally agree.
And if you don’t like it,then you start your own company and see how easy that is!
If you’ve chosen the lazy way out in making a living (employee) shut the fuck up and tow the line.

People who don’t like to be told what to do bite the bullet and employ themselves!

shida kuishi apartments no playground then watoi kusomea academies with no fields so hata talents za michezo hawako exposed inayobaki ni “bedminton” & sure they’re not disappointing here

interns should be paid salaries almost equal to that of permanent staff. its not fair to treat them badly and calling them inexperienced. everyone must start somewhere but in Kenya exploitation is the order of the day. interns are overworked and abused coz they have hopes to be absorbed by the company they are working for. we have seen here several times ile bukusu jinga ya equity bragging how he fuacks interns. araaaa. ata interns wa professional customer service like SJ are paid the same as their colleagues.

The essence of owning and running a business is making profit and helping other people, by using people. The secret to securing a good, permanent job, therefore, is being so productive and resourceful that you’re almost irreplaceable. That’s how I secured my job.
Television shows and societal pressure mislead graduates into trying to pilfer without working as hard.
You don’t make money, you earn it.

companies are users. when you get employed it is equivalent to exchanging your life for money.

mimi natafuta position ya kuwa intern, i did Bsc. In Management of Agroecosystem and Environment. Any referrals i will appreciate.
