Microsoft insists Fireball malware has not infected 250m PCs despite security firm claims
Damien Cox 1 hour ago Featured Tech News, Security

Fireball has been a hot topic lately, with security firm, CheckPoint, claiming that this branch of Chinese malware has infected 250 million computers worldwide. However, it turns out that the number of infected PCs may have been massively overestimated, as Microsoft has since spoken out against this claim, asking for a closer look at the research.

CheckPoint made these claims at the start of June, denouncing Beijing-based digital marketing agency, Rafotech, for using Fireball to manipulate its victims’ browser.

“Fireball has two main functionalities: the ability of running any code on victim computers–downloading any file or malware, and hijacking and manipulating infected users’ web-traffic to generate ad-revenue.” Infected users will experience “their default search engines and home pages turn into fake search engines. This redirects the queries to either yahoo.com or Google.com”.

“The fake search engines include tracking pixels used to collect the users’ private information. Fireball has the ability to spy on victims, perform efficient malware dropping, and execute any malicious code in the infected machines, this creates a massive security flaw in targeted machines and networks.”

In its own post evaluating the threat, Microsoft has stated that “the reported magnitude of its reach might have been overblown”. The company has been keeping a close eye on Fireball since 2015 and it now has eyes on CheckPoint too, following the firm’s recent claims. According to Microsoft, the data gathered by Check Point is flawed, as the data shows the total visits to fake search engine pages, rather than the number of devices actually infected.

“Not every machine that visits one of these sites is infected with malware. The search pages earn revenue regardless of how a user arrives at the page. Some may be loaded by users who are not infected during normal web browsing, for example, via advertisements or domain parking.”

Microsoft estimates the number of infected PCs to be closer to 5 million, rather than 250 million. However, CheckPoint appears to be standing by its original research for the time being, though the firm did concede that the numbers are “at least 40 million”, rather than the 5 million predicted by Microsoft. While the numbers are being evaluated CheckPoint has agreed to give Microsoft access to its data, which will hopefully result in a swifter solution to the problem.

Bill gates are you lying again!!!

I think this is one of those trojans that come with some Windows installer packages downloaded off the net.

There’s also reports of TBs of Windows source code having been leaked. Interesting cyber times.

Saw it last week when it was published ati 250 mill infected thought it was fake news but then ms talking like it exists but the impact is exaggerated got my ears twitching

250 million infections does seem very much exaggerated. It would have been on the radar of many security researchers. Didn’t Lenovo pull some shit like that a couple of years ago with Superfish spyware. They got caught right out of the gate.

Problem is the impact(first hand experience of the user) of the attack isn’t serious but the exploit is dangerous so its until its reported massively which is hard since most people will scrub it off as a simple trip ya software imo though

Makes sense. Though most AVs will very easily detect that kind of malware by behavioural analysis. AVs are so paranoid nowadays. But if it’s infecting browsers then that might be a different story. Still 250 million is a very large number.

Windows 10 users don’t put Av these days especially in europe wana trust windows security

HUGE mistake!

I know…but you cant save errbody i almost meet comps na windows basic av.Especially 45+ wao ni wakununua laptop kuscroll msn page pekee and social media.have a Norwegian uncle his laptop kutoka windows 10 basic install imeongezwa vlc na ilikuwa mimi when i visited his place.he reset it the moment i left.

Windows 10 ni meffi…just install wireshark on your router and see how many times the OS calls home i.e contacts the Microsoft servers…they collect a lot of info from your comp and store it in their servers

I use Windows 10 and I can’t say how much I have come to hate it of late. Here are some reasons.

 1. Forcing Universal apps down our throats.
 2. Windows telemetry and Cortana.
 3. Stuff breaking randomly. One minute explorer is able to open VHD files the next it’s not.
 4. Taking a core part of it, the Control Panel, and crippling it then scattering the functions on a shitty universal app called Settings.
 5. Cannot disable lock screen on the latest build Pro edition. Pro fucking edition!
 6. The flimsy calculator app.
 7. Windows store can no longer be disabled.

It’s sad that this is the best OS there is for me. I am trying various Linux based OSs but they are something else.

Thats why I have chosen to stick to Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edishen until further notice

Unfortunately my comp does not have Windows 7 drivers. And Win 7 also takes a looooooooong time to recognise some USB devices I use.

Its shitty but unaona those are like nick picking to some users me am okay with it.Works nicely with my xbox one …plex and kodi hazisumbui and wont lie some games have played a lil better on the dirrect x 12.Plus its windows tuko ndaaani wengi so softwares cracked and shit hazisumbui. But the store is hell though and especially the unversal gaming platform thing sucks.I can’t play my xbox one quantum break kwa pc cuz in the store imakataa na hautambui my secondary video card but the cracked version works so i get your fustrations

Which comp is that?

Just switch up bruh no need…juzi naona mse na windows 7 and i couldn’t use it but wont lie ukiwa na kitu like 8 gb ram windows 10 behaves and i have realised my settings huwa ziko transferred to whatever machine i log in to

Oook but what about my softwares zenye support yake ni hadi win 7 itakuwaje nkiswitch??

all softwares siku hizi siko na windows 10 land windows also supports backward compatabilty…try and dual install and try them out

It’s some HP G something Am not sure with version it is lol. I’ll to confirm the model number.
