Guy just some small usaidizi apa… Some clarification tafadhali.
Early cars (picha imekaa kuwa uploaded sorry) had 2 gear sticks moja short na nyingine refu ambazo made a car to b 4 wheel na how they worked sijui (a little help apo) compared na nowadys cars ambazo 4 wheel cars ziko na just 1n gear stick plus a button written 4 wheel… So my question is how do this 2 gear shift works.

Kwa ufupi, when using manual, you’re mechanically engaging the t-case instead of pushing a button and relying on wiring and a shift motor to do it; in the case of buttons…

The older versions also had options for 4 wheel drive High and Low. It offered much more higher gearing ratios and combinations. But that button push thing only offers 4 wheel or 2 wheel options.

When the tiny lever is on two high - you’re on normal 2 wheel drive and only the rear wheels are pushing.
On 4H you have ratios that have more or less the same torque as 2H so your driving power is delivered to all 4 wheels and you can do relatively high speeds.
4L is for high torque, slow speed 4x4. Good for crawling, uprooting, pushing matatus and towing heavy loads.
At N regardless of what gear the main gear box is in, the propeller shafts are disengaged so the car just revs.
I believe this is how it should be for any self-respecting 4x4.

Lada Niva even had an option for 2WD low.
I don’t know why other manufacturers never included it.
Manual Pajero have an option for diff locks on 4H.
You can climb over a wall with that.

So for normal driving you are supposed to have 2H engaged

I’ll speak for Suzuki Sierra and Chevy.
Not a must but you have to come to a complete stop or else you’ll grind the teeth.
Even worse, Suzuki you must get out of the car to engage or disengage the diff locks manually.
