These come in 2.0 L engines. It could be the engine specifications is higher than what was allowed locally by then but I am not sure
Nissan Skyline was a good car but didn’t meet the requirements set for Safari rally such as having produced a certain number of street legal cars for everyday use by ordinary drivers. The Lancers, Celicas and Ford Focus were everyday cars but the Skyline was a Circuit rally car
The skyline was produced as a road going performance everyday car and used to compete with the Evolution among others. Maybe its the specs as mentioned by @Punda since it was a 2.6l twin turbo inline 6

The Quattro was probably the reason group b went the way of the dodo. That thing had mfing power.
So reminiscent, I remember the last safari rally very fondly. Hopefully, its 2020 return will be awesome.
But on that note, i also want to try out the Safari Classic Rally in my lifetime.
