Greed and Taxes in Kenya

Ile upus iko Kenya inakidhiri mipaka. Why are cars expensive in Kenya? Unapata a second hand car that is designated as junk elsewhere fetching top dollar sometimes more than the MSRP in more developed countries. Ona atrocity

US unapata hii na 300k. Tulikosea mungu ni wajameni?

Makes me really wonder if it’s worth it to own high priced foreigns in this country, you could afford it yes but just the thought of you paying that unreasonable tax premium…like you could literally buy an extra car with those extreme tax figures just puts me off. @magreb would you say it’s a bad idea getting one of these ‘endless money pits’ used?

Wivu itakuua. Ng’ang’ana ukuwe kama wanaume wenzako. Anyway jibambe.

Hii thinking yako utabaki you own 5 demios instead of a Mercedes benz

Taxation and it is across the board…a brand new well optioned discovery costs around $60000 (a base model will be cheaper by 8-9k) in UK, that is around the retail price for a 7 year old imported model here, while getting the brand new one is around 15 million (Porsche 911 money). This situation is the same for all V8’s, Mercedes, Audis e.t.c…all this coz of taxes…most cars people show out with in Kenya would be valued as junk abroad, even the Mercedes…vehicles are overvalued in Kenya coz of the taxation regime, it is bad because cars costs a lot more than they should but depreciate at a lesser rate as compared to if they would have stayed at their ports of origin

The Kenyan car market defies all known logic. An 8 year old Mercedes s320 costs in excess of 4 mirrions while in the US and UK, it goes for an equivalent of 600k coz it is designated as junk.

If you have watched Django Unchained, you will remember the scene where the house nigger cannot believe that a black man should actually ride a horse. He in fact hates Django all because Django is on an actual horse and is doing well for himself.

Now that same mentality is what possesses Kenyan politicians particularly the families. There is nothing that makes them more irritated than the fact that Kenyans can buy good cars for themselves. It irritates them beyond belief. Its why the entire JKIA expressway is being built. To keep Kenyans off the roads.

TL:DR The taxes will get much worse as KANU retakes this country.

Not really, my point was the fact that you’re overpaying heavily for 6-8 yr old vehicles…then make it worse a German car with those yrs plus substantial mileage is just sleepless nights.

This is the price for loose income tax enforcement. Can’t have it all bro.

kulipa ushuru nikujitegema, taxing vehicles more is way cheaper than following up on the informal sector to bring it on the tax bracket.

I agree with you on “as KANU retakes this country”. We are yet to suffer!

Magreb si wewe uishi UG. I hear its cheaper to import it from there

How does UG compare to TZ & SSD? Imagine bagging this with 30,000KMs or less on it with the very least of import taxes to pay, instead of contemplating an 8 year older car for the same budget.

What model is that?

It’s a 2019 Toyota Supra.

Cars are way cheaper in UG shida ni kununua na kuleta Kenya na number plate ya Kenya no sawa na kujikamua. For perspective, a harrier that goes for 2m in Kenya unaweza pata na 900k. Forester ya 700k huku ni 350. Ingia olx ya ug ujionee.

The idea behind the taxation is to discourage importation of vehicles && encourage people to buy locally assembeled vehicles(create more jobs). The problem is that incompetent people in government are the ones making these decisions and they dont know whether these policies actually work or not. + once KRA discovers a cash cow, its not gonna let it go.
