Tumekusikia loud and clear.

Yes. Because people have to eat affordably. In Kenya, animal feed (maize) competes with human feed (maize) - the Bagandans eat Lutoke and use their maize as chicken feed - so they can produce chicken more cheaply- Inaitwa economics 101.
Your government has an insatiable appetite for money, that's why they tax your farmers to death. Instead of opening the borders for imports why can't the government reduce the taxes on imputs and encourage food production. It is a stupid government that increases taxes just to get money to send 330 people to a COP27 meeting in Egypt, one of the biggest delegations to go talk about climate change. Waafrika mmerogwa.

A crate of eggs was going for 300bob a few months ago. Today, it is retailing at about 450bob.

Open the import doors and the price will come down but the local farmers will be locked out of the business because of high cost of inputs.
open import doors, loose valuable foreign exchange, kenya shilling loses against regional currencies, prices of imports goes higher, kenya loses more money on imports versus exports. rinse repeat.
local production (with lower energy prices i.e. stima, mafuta) is solution lakini wakiambiwa wanasema subsidy mbaya.

So maize farmers wapewe subsidised fertiliser to cushion them lakini poultry farmers wajaribu biashara ingine? Isokei.
Maize is a staple food, and the most cultivated grain in Kenya.

Poultry farming isn't as big, and the food isn't staple.

If you have to hurt one to lift the other, YOU HURT THE POULTRY FARMERS

When you have an abundance of food, the well established cartels in the food industry lose their power.

And don't get it twisted, more people will benefit from the abundance than those that will lose out in sales.

Plus food abundance in a country as innovative as Kenya will push the sellers to manufacturing and value addition
those established cartels are the ones who want to import food to make higher profits
