HELB "victims" are not alone

Student debt is sinking millennials

Student loan debt, totaling $1.5 trillion in the U.S., is forcing millennials to put off important financial and life milestones, according to a recent Bankrate survey. Some 34% of respondents said they were delaying building emergency savings, while 27% said they were delaying paying off other debt — including credit cards. In addition, 10% said they were putting off having children and 9% said they delayed getting married due to the money they owe.

You cannot compare the burden of student debt in Kenya to the US. There is absolutely zero accountability and “burden” for Kenyan defaulters.

Amused, you are posting this from a country where millennials get sponsorships, scholarships, accomodation, food, clothes, cash grants, philanthropists and busy bodies throwing themselves at them etc. The same cannot be said about our Uni students.
Some of the youth in the west are v lazy.

Mimi kwanza silipi HELB!

You are so very wrong! That’s the first “cultural shock” nightmare which grabs people when they seek overseas education. 1) you pay 3x the amount local (resident) students pay 2) if you ever get eligible for student loans, you have to be an outstanding student and no bad credit 3) you most likely have to work full time because no scholarship caters for all your needs.

And another thing; you see how you say you won’t repay HELB and can probably will get away with it? Here it gets on your credit rating and NEVER goes away; which means forget about buying a house, nice car or anything else that requires borrowing money.

The point was not to compare countries because it is impossible; the point was each locale has its challenges can both can be debilitating. Student loans are a part of being a responsible adult.

Again, not an actual problem in a country where you can get a large sum of money without going through the banks or institutions which use CRB. There is no way to get around this in the US apart from being a drug dealer or a robber … which is still useless because you’ll have to give out too much personal info when purchasing property which will then alert the authorities.

Do you understand that it is possible to be a millionaire in Kenya without anyone knowing about it? You can buy land, a car, apply for the necessary paperwork to run a business, you can apply for top level jobs, you can even enroll in a university course and be accepted while you still have an outstanding debt at another university.

Until we have a system half as efficient as the one they have in first world countries, this process is just a joke and defaulters cannot compare their situation with that of Americans suffering with student loan problems.

Your heading was not clear so think we are not reading from the same page. I know there is a difference between home and international students and they are therefore entitled to different ‘benefits’.
Amused atee no scholarship caters for all your needs? unless you are including luxurious stuff like clothes shopping but I know for sure that Trumpistan is one of the most generous countries in God’s earth when it comes to looking after millineals who want to get on in life.
As for my kulipa HELB…silipi mimi. What do you mean non payment of student loans get your credit file ruined forever? is there no expiry date say like after 6 years? I need to check this.

A full ride scholarship means tuition, fees and room and board. And maybe a token stipend. But what are you going to eat? What happens to you during spring and summer hols? How do you get from Point A to B? I don’t think you know for sure what you’re talking about.

I mean mpaka the day you die! Student loans MUST be repaid and they can actually garnish your pay or taxes.

Not a problem if you study something worthwhile. Most of my colleagues with loans got them paid off by their employers.

Watu walisoma “women studies, race or anthropology” ketini pale———>

During breaks most students should get themselves a job regardless.

I reside in a different country where different rules apply which is why I said…we are not reading from the same page. However, I know a few kids who got full scholars huko Trumpistan.

You may be talking about another country but you specifically used ‘Trumpistan’ as an example.
Regarding work, there’s another problem… you can’t work on a student visa - which means you have to change it to H1B, which means you might lose your scholarship. At some point, you will have to resort to panya routes if your dad is not a mbirrionaire.

Refer to my last sentence hapo juu…

I am trying to impress on you that a full scholarship doesn’t mean that all your needs are taken care of. Lakini, haidhuru…

Jeez and I have expressed that I understand that v well. Read me again please slowly. I have not said anywhere that a full scholarship means all your whims are met, and infact if a student wants to impress their sponsors they do some work during holidays to earn some keep for their luxuries.

For whom it may concern: You can actually negotiate with the employer to pay off student loans in lieu of a sign-on bonus. If you are in demand.
