Starting yesterday, home-bankers and other thugs have 5 months to clear any stash of 1000 shillings notes they may be holding. This shocker is contained in a gazette notice issued yesterday. This move will certainly prove tricky given the heightened efforts of the Kenya Revenue Authority to increase tax compliance. The situation is further exacerbated by the recent roll-out of the huduma number, which will make it easy to account for everyone who effects huge currency exchanges. Those with huge amounts will henceforth have a difficult time explaining the source of their paper.
