How I was Conned 1.2M

This is a very informative story on how people make mistakes in life… but choose to move on… Its a story of determination and courage… It’s a story from the past and the tuliona brigade kaeni kado… It’s a long read but worth the time… I will copy paste it from MKZ in three posts as it was posted then in 2014…

How I was Conned of 1.2m

Please read this not to fall prey to what I fell into. Always listen to your Instincts.
Always trust your first gut instincts. If you genuinely feel in your heart and soul that something is wrong, it usually is.
I might never get my cash back, but at least I can help another person avoid the mistakes I made.
Its a long story and I will write it in two bits. How I was conned and How I managed to get the Woman.
From the Month of May 2013 I wanted to purchase a plot in Embu a place called Dallas Estate and told some land brokers about it.
I was shown several plots that were on sale and I disliked some of them. Towards the end of June I spotted one plot that I liked. I was given its plot number particulars and went ahead to do its search in the Lands offices here in Embu. I further got the Green Card of the said piece of land. I went further to the municipal council offices and requested about the land rates balances and I was told it had a balance Ksh 76368. It was registered in the Name of Nesta Wangigi Ireri. It had no caution.
I told a Broker by name Mutinda who had shown me the particular piece of land that I had done the search and I was willing to meet the Seller.
He told me that he was shown the piece of land by another Broker called Ali. So we were to meet Ali who had the contacts of the seller. On July 1st we visited the plot together with Ali and Mutinda. Ali said that he does not have the contacts of the Woman selling the plot but had the contacts of his Son who lives in Nakuru. The number was 0700759939. I was given the number but I did not call it, but told Ali and Mutinda that it is their duty to bring the seller to me. By this time they had told me that the selling price was 1.8m but I had offered to pay 1.5m which they communicated to the said son and was accepted as long as I was going to pay all at once.
After some communication between the Brokers and the Son, it was agreed that the Son will travel from Nakuru and meet with his mother in Embu and then we can meet and finalize the deal on 4th July 2013.
On the evening of 3rd July the son in Nakuru called and Ali and told him that he does not have fare to travel to Embu and so he requested that Ksh 1000 be sent to him so that He can make it to Embu. I told Ali that I was not going to part with any money before I have seen the seller.
Mutinda decided to part with his 1000 and sent to the said son.
On 4th July at around 10.00am, Mutinda called and informed me that the seller and his son had arrived. I met them in a hotel in Embu near former Kanu offices
Upon arrival I was informed that the son who was traveling from Nakuru was involved in an Accident and was badly injured and did not make it. So another son by the name Muriithi had accompanied the mother.
I offered to buy them tea but they declined and said that they had already taken tea as they waited for me.
The first thing that I requested for was the ID of the said “Nesta” so that I can be sure she was the real seller. She declined and responded in Kikuyu “ Riu wee mwanake uretia kibandi na gutiri undu twaritie atia, kibandi kirutagirwo kwa wakiri” {Now Young man you are requesting for ID and we have not discussed anything, ID is to be produced in Lawyers office” . Mutinda and Ali did not say a thing and I felt as if I was so rush and decided to forget about it and believed that the ID was to be produced in the Lawyers office.
“Nesta” told me that she is sure that I have been told all the details about her plot which I responded in affirmative. She told me that she started selling that plot last year {2012} and there is a woman who had paid some amount for the said plot {Ksh 600,000} but has been unable to clear the balance and they have agreed that she can sell it and have her refunded her 600000 minus 10% according to their sale agreement.
She further told me that there was a church that was willing to purchase the plot for Ksh 1.8m but were only able to pay in bits.
She told me that if I had the 1.5m that I had promised she could sell it to me. I made it clear to her that I could only buy if the buyer who had paid 600000 was there and have her agreement canceled and have her money back. She told me that there was no problem and she will make arrangements to have her come. I also told her that I would like her to take me to the said plot so that I can confirm it from her. She also made it clear that her title was in Advocates office {Githinji Karuri Advocates} where they left it after she was paid Ksh 600,000 pending the clearance of the balance.
We also agreed that I was going to pay her Ksh 1.2m upon meeting that lady in the advocate’s office and then the balance of Ksh300, 000, was to pay her on 12th July 2013 after the Lands Board meeting on that day.
She said that she was going to call this lady and excused herself to go and buy airtime. So she left us with Muriithi {His Son}. So Mutinda, Ali, Muriithi and I were left in the hotel as “Nesta” went to make a call.
We waited for her for almost two hours. She did not reappear there again, but called his son and told him that we can go for the site viewing.
We walked from the Hotel to the BP petrol station {Near Highway Court Hotel} and picked a Taxi, a Toyota Staret. Muriithi kept on talking with his mother, “Nesta”. He sat on the front passenger seat of the car and asked the driver to drive up again towards where we had come from. We stopped there and Muriithi called her mother again and he was told that she was near Highway court hotel. So we went back there and she was not there. He again called and he was told that she was walking down the road heading to Nairobi. We spotted her past a Kobil petrol station and the vehicle stopped. I expected Muriithi to give her mother space at the front seat, but the mother squeezed there back. So we were squeezed three men and one woman in the back seat of a Toyota staret. At that point something told me that this “Nesta” might not be the mother of Muriithi.
We drove up to Dallas estate and the Mother with Son directed us to the same plot that I had been shown by the brokers.
We spent like 30 minutes there, where she narrated how the plot was sold to her by a Deputy Mayor called Murangi Gakinya. That was exactly what I had found in the Green Card. She also told me that the said woman who had paid her Ksh 600,000 was not in Embu and was traveling to come and meet us.
We went back to town and I paid for the taxi. We were dropped near the G4S offices, in the same building that the Advocate Githinji Karuri is located.
While there she kept on trying to reach the other lady, and every time she would say the network was not clear.
Now it was around 2pm and I told her we can only meet tomorrow {5th July 2013}. I further told her that I was going to pay her through Bank Transfer. She objected and said that she has a lot of debts in banks, and if I paid her through the bank she won’t get her money. I insisted that I was not going to carry all that cash to pay her.
After I insisted on paying through the bank she said in Kikuyu.
“David {his son Muriithi} nduire uyu mbeca iria urakuite cia tataguo irari ciigana” {“David tell this man the money that you carried for your aunt”} Which Muriithi said it was 3.5M. I still insisted that I will pay through Bank.
She became furious and told me that she was no longer interested in the deal since the bank will deduct all the money. I tried to tell her to open an account in another bank. She told me that Banks are now connected. She was like 55-60 years and did not most of her natural teeth but the artificial teeth. Her age made me think that it was the reason for all these fears even refusing to produce the ID card.
While parting with her I told her I will decide whether I will pay the 1.2M in cash. So we parted and went different ways at around 3pm. As I walked down the road his son followed me and requested that I lend him Ksh 500 and He was to refund the following day. Since I was so much into that plot I agreed to lend him Ksh 500.
I went back to my store and shared all the details with my wife of what we discussed and my reservations on paying the cash. At around 4.30pm something in my mind told me that the plot was okay and I can pay in cash. I told my wife about it. I rushed to Equity Bank and found the Security man closing the bank door. He allowed me in. I withdrew Ksh 1.1M from my bank account. Walked back with the cash to my other store and found my two employees there and asked them to close the store and leave me there. I kept that cash in there and then walked down to the other store {where my wife was}. I picked Ksh 100,000 from her drawer and took it to where I had kept 1.1m. So in total in the upper store I had Ksh 1.2M.
At around 6 pm I decided to call “Nesta” using his son’s number and told her that there was no need for me to pay her 1.2m and then wait for just a week to clear the balance.
I told her we meet tomorrow {5th July} and I pay her the whole amount 1.5m and then have the Land transferred to me through a Special Lands Board. She said its okay and even the Advocate will direct us what to do.
So at around 9.00am I went back to equity bank and withdrew Ksh 300,000. I told my wife about it. I further told her that I was going to carry that cash with me to the advocate’s office and after we finalize all the details she can bring me the 1.2M which was in the upper store.
At around 10.00am Mutinda called me and told me that Nesta had arrived with Muriithi and they were waiting for the other lady. I joined them and after few minutes the other lady joined us. She was introduced to me by Nesta as Mary Njoki. Mary narrated to me how she had decided to buy the plot but was unable to repay the balance due to sickness of her disabled child. She had put on Dark shades and I could not see her eyes clearly. But the dress that she had put on was similar to a head scarf that “Nesta” had. So my instincts told me that these ladies know each other or they might even be friends. But I ignored that voice.
We agreed to go to the advocate’s office —Kimjoy Building. In the office we found that the advocate had another client and so we waited there. Nesta and Njoki sat on the same seat {wooden form} outside the waiting area. I sat on another Seat with Muriithi. From where I was seated I could see Nesta talking to Njoki and whenever our eyes met they stopped talking. My instincts further told me that something was amiss. Further I suppressed my instincts and thought all was okay. However I decided to put my Ideos Phone in recording mode as we entered the Advocates office. I put the phone in my shirts pocket.
Upon entering the advocate {Ken Githinji Karuri} was seated on the Left hand side- Muriithi, Mutinda and Ali sat on that side.
On the other side was Nesta, Njoki and Me. I was near the door.
So Nesta did the introductions and said she had come back to resell her plot since Njoki was unable to finalize the payments. He asked where the title was and he was told that the title was in his office……He pretended to be so busy to remember. He asked the secretary to bring in the title. I checked it and it looked authentic even with the Seal. But I found it to be so new given that it was issued in 1990. All the details matched what I had found in the lands office.
Advocate asked who the purchaser was and said I was the one. He asked whether we had agreed on price. I told him yes 1.5M. He asked for our IDs and He first took the ID of “Nesta” and copied the details on a white paper. He even showed the ID to Mutinda and the ID number on the Title and said they corresponded. I did not pick that ID to see whether it was okay since I trusted the said Advocate.
He then picked my ID and again copied my details on the white paper.
He then asked how we were going to do the payments, and I said we have agreed that we are going to have a special Lands board and pay her after transfer is made the whole 1.5m.
The advocate asked me whether I was aware that there is nothing like Special Lands Board in the Lands Act. He told us that the special boards have a lot of issues and advised against using a Special Lands board. He told us that they were even banned in Kerugoya. He suggested that since the Normal Lands Board meeting is on 12th July 2013, I can pay whatever we agree with “Nesta” and pay the balance on Friday {12th July 2013}.
So my plan of paying 1.5M and having the transfer on this day was rejected by the advocate.
I requested that we walk out with “Nesta” and agree on how to make the payments. While Outside I suggested that I pay her Ksh 800,000 and the balance next week. She rejected this and said that she was to pay Njoki Ksh 540000 and then Ksh 76368 to pay the land rates.
She stood her ground and I agreed to pay her 1.2M in cash. We went back to the advocate and told him what we had agreed that I pay her 1.2M and the balance of Ksh 300000 on 12th July 2013. So He drafted the agreement and asked her secretary to do the typing and give her like twenty minutes. So we all walked out to wait for the Sale agreement to be ready.
While outside the advocate came to where I was standing and told me that I looked so familiar. I told him that I once operated a business in an opposite building in 2008 when I came to Embu. We chatted for some minutes and he told me that he had been practicing since 1985. I thought he must be a good advocate having practiced all that long since I was 4 years old. He told me that we could walk back since the twenty minutes were over. We walked back and I called my wife to bring the cash. She called me while at the G4S offices and walked with her to the office. She opened her bag and gave me a black paper that contained the 1.2m. I had bundled them in bundles of 200000. So there were 6 Bundles. My wife left immediately.
When the advocate saw that the cash had arrived…he started trembling noticeably. He signed the agreements and said that he will leave us to go and see some of his clients who had been arrested. Before he left I asked him to cancel the agreements that Njoki had of the same piece of land. He asked for the agreements that were dated November 2012 and tore them and drafted another saying that those agreements were now canceled. It was typed by secretary and he signed. He told us to confirm the cash and pay his fees of Ksh 6000. We were to share this with Nesta.I handed the 1.2m to Nesta. The advocate left the Office. Money was confirmed by Muriithi and I also assisted in counting 540000 that was paid to Njoki.
We agreed with Nesta that I was to give her my Pin and ID Copy plus two colour passports photo to book for the lands board meeting that was to be held on 12th July 2013.
She told me that we will be in touch after she has kept the money safe. So we left the office with the sale agreements and I still had my Ksh 300000 with me.
Ali later came to my store and told me that he had been asked by “Nesta” to come for the Pin, ID copy and the passport photos which I gave him.
By evening my instincts became so strong and I connected the dots backwards and knew that I had been conned and told my wife who kept on encouraging me. I tried to call Nesta countless times but she did not pick up. She later called me at 8.00pm and told me that she booked the Lands Board Meeting and we were to meet on 12th July 2013

HOW I WAS CONNED 1.2M PART 2

BY MOSES KARIUKI:

I have also uploaded the conversation that I had with the Woman on 18th July 2013 I will post the remaining bit later that scared hell out of me…And the main motivation why i decided to post all this.
Even after connecting the dots and realized that I had been conned I still convinced my self that maybe there was a chance. I decided to wait for the seven days to see if she will appear for the Lands Board meeting. On 13th July 2013 {Saturday} my instincts became clearer and I could not suppress them again. Bitterness overcame me and I could not work. I spent that Saturday afternoon in the house sleeping. Woke up at 8.00pm took supper and slept again. I can’t exactly remember how I spent the Sunday 14th July 2013. But on Monday I tried to call all the numbers that I had been given 0705219175 {Nesta Number}, 0704982863 {Muriithi, Nesta’s Son}, 0700759939 {Nesta’s Son- This one was registered in the name Kimeri when money was sent by Mutinda, This is the son who was allegedly invovolved in an accident while traveling from Nakuru}. None of these numbers went through. They had all been switched off. My fears were confirmed further. All this time I was telling the Broker {Mutinda} who had shown me the plot about all this. He kept on encouraging me that all will be well, telling me to be patient until Friday.
On Wednesday I had put a lot of pressure on him and he could not take it any more. On that night he decided to send Ksh 50 to each of the two numbers {Nesta number-0705219175} and Muriithi’s number {0704982863}. To my dismay the sellers number was registered in the name Nesta Ireri and the other number was in the name of David Muriithi.
This cooled me a little bit, but my instincts kept on telling me that this is a well executed plan and I was simply conned.
On Thursday I traveled to Nairobi and was busy so the whole day I was occupied and I did not worry much. On that evening I tried to call the numbers but none of them went through.
At around 8.30 I sent a friend to go and check whether “Nesta” booked the Lands Board meeting since it was to be on that day. While there he called me and told me that she never booked the meeting. So she lied to me and now I had confirmed I was conned.
Over the weekend I tried to call the numbers hundreds of times but none went through. On Monday I went to the advocate’s office accompanied by Mutinda. I informed him that the woman did not turn up for the Lands Board Meeting on 12th July 2013. He pretended to be very angry; and asked why would someone behave like so. He asked me to give me the number of the woman. I gave him the number and he tried to call and said it was Mteja. He asked the secretary whether the lady had come for the title. She responded that it was still there. At that juncture I knew this man was in the deal. He further told me that “you know the title is still hers, and she can come for it”, at that point I remembered in the agreement there was no condition that the title was to remain there. I told him he should not let that happen. He told the secretary not to let the lady pick up the title while I was not there.
I further asked him whether he could assist me to put a CAUTION on the said plot. He told me that it was a good idea but he could direct me to another lawyer who would assist me. He told me that it would look unprofessional for him to witness the payment then put a CAUTION. There was no doubt in my mind that this man was in this con deal.
I had to move fast and report the matter. From there I proceeded to the then DCIO {Edwin Kamau} office. He is one of the CID officer that I came to like much. I was accompanied by Mutinda. This was the first time that I met him but Mutinda knew him.
I explained to him what happened and told him that I thought I had been conned.
He told me that it’s true I was indeed conned, but felt sorry for me. He asked me for all the mobile numbers that were used. He immediately made a call and the numbers were traced in Wan’guru/Mwea areas.
He advised me to pretend as though nothing has happened and when the fraudsters call I tell them to come for the balance. He also told me that I should not tell them that I have the whole amount of Ksh300000 but I tell them a figure like Ksh 100000. By that it would seem true.
The following day Muriithi made a call to Ali and asked him to tell me to call him. I called him and he told me that they are no longer in Kenya but they are in Uganda.
He told me that they transferred the brother who was involved in the accident to hospital in Uganda for a specialized treatment.
He was sorry that they did not make it to the board, and they were now requesting if I can send them some more money. I pretended as though I could send later in the day so that He keeps his phone on. I kept on telling a lie that I am still going to send something. This kept him waiting and I kept DCIO updated. DCIO kept on having the number tracked to be in Mwea, Mutithi and Mathigaini areas in Kirinyaga.
On 18th July I told Muriithi that I can only send the money if I am able to communicate with his mother. On this date he told me that he was on the way to the hospital in Uganda where the Mother and his brother were. So he told me that once he is there he will give her the phone we talk. I decided to record all that call so that the voice could help me in tracing the woman.
At around 1307hrs Muriithi told me that he was now in the hospital with her mother. At exactly 1309hrs I made a call using my number and the phone was in recording mode. I was now talking with Nesta using his son’s {Muriithi} number. The call lasted for like 18 minutes. All through she was telling me how the hospital bill had gone up for her son. She explained to me how she had spent money that I had paid her and she had no money remaining. She wanted me to send her the money using Mpesa since that record will still be in the Mpesa system. I tried to convince her to even call the lawyer and see if he could accept to have such payments made.
I stood the ground and told her that I could pay her even Ksh100000 if she came to Embu and I pay her before the lawyer.
She told me that she did not even have fare and had even sold his cow at home. She was telling me in Kikuyu “Ungiona Mundu endetie kagombe gaki gwi kindu etigiirie” {If you see a person selling his/her only cow, does he/she have anything left”.
Towards the end of the call she told me that she will remain in Uganda if there are no means, since I told her to look for bus fare and I will refund her once she is here in Embu.
Immediately the call ended the son called me and asked what we had talked with his mother since she looked angry and disappointed. I explained to him as if they were not together and asked him to convince her mother that even if she stayed in the hospital with no money, she is not helping the son.
This Woman was so smart and she did not dare put on her phone again but the son kept on calling me the days that followed. I kept his hopes alive that I was going to send more money.
I kept on updating DCIO and I told him that the trick of having the woman come for the money was not working.
On 24th July 2013 DCIO told me that these people are smart and they now know that you already know you had been conned. He advised me to now report the matter formally. He called the Advocate Githinji Karuri and asked him to release the title deed to me and have it checked whether it was genuine.
I went to the Advocates office and picked up the title after he drafted a letter stating that I had collected the Title deed and I signed.
All this time I was with Mutinda. We went to Lands offices here in Embu just next to the police station. Like five staff we asked the title was genuine since it had the seal and the same paper that they used before they brought the new ones with the water marks. When I insisted that it must be fake they called a lady who had worked there since those offices were opened. She had over 25years working there. She was to verify it by looking at the signature. She said that the title looked genuine but there was never such a signature in the 1990s.
From there we proceeded to the DCIO office and told him that the title was indeed fake. He asked me to go to the OB and start the formal reporting. I reported the matter and later recorded a statement. Mutinda and Ali also recorded a statement. The matter was now in the police hands for investigations.
The bad part I did not even have the fake ID copy of the woman, her passport photo or anything. All what I had was that she looked 50-60yrs and she had prosthetic/
artificial teeth {Not that she told me so , but I observed her teeth were so flat at the edges and very white—I was convinced they were not natural}, She also had a well built posture, She also had a small black growth on her nose
And now I had her voice. Those were the details that I hoped would help me get her.
To cut the long story short….Police kept on arresting other people in other deals and telling me to go and check if she was there or the accomplices.
The remaining part of the month I relied on the police to help me but nothing positive came in only that they were in Mwea, Thiba areas.
I accepted that I was conned and will never get my money back, I talked to many friends and decided to move on. My wife encouraged me that all was not lost. I told Mutinda to forget about all that and let me heal my own way. I did not want to see him with Ali in my place any more.
One feels embarrassed and ashamed after being conned. I decided that I was not going to remain silent and shared all this with many business people here who are my close friends. I knew if I remained silent I was going to help this con thrive here.
In fact these friends helped me in acquiring a much better plot that was clean. This was necessary to help me heal.
On 6th August 2013 a friend came to console me and told me how he was also conned by the people from Kerugoya. He told me that they must be the same people. He told me all these people who are criminals most of them are from Mwea and Kerugoya.I told him mine are all traced to Mwea.
I told him that I reported the matter to police……He laughed and told me….that police will never help me…I told him that I realized that and I decided to forget about all that and heal.
He told me that 1.2m is a lot of money and we must get it back. He asked me to look for those people on our own means. I accepted and on the same day he asked me to go up to Kerugoya even if the criminals are traced to Mwea.
We used my car and drove up to Kerugoya where we met another friend and shared the whole story. The new friend made just a call and another friend was there in no time. Let me just call the new friends of kerugoya AA , and BB, and use IT instead of HE or SHE . my friend called me aside and told me not to tell BB exactly what happened since IT might know the woman and if IT know a lot of money was involved we might never get the woman. So AA told me to tell BB that I was conned of just Ksh 50,000 which was part payment of an old Chevloret vehicle that I was buying for 80,000.
I went back to where BB was and IT asked me to tell it who I was looking for. When I explained the physical appearance, IT told me in Kikuyu “Kai akwendeirie Ruhuho”. {Did she sell to you wind}. IT was laughing as I responded in affirmative.
Even before I had explained the whole story of the Chevloret, BB told me that IT knew her so well. I felt like this was another con but my friend from Embu would never let such happen to me.
To make sure BB knew who I was looking for I asked IT to listen to the recording I made on 18th July 2013. IT just listened to like two sentences and asked me to stop and did not even get the context of the conversation since IT could have realized it was a plot deal and not a Chevloret. It laughed and told me “eetagwo Jane” {She is called Jane}.
IT told me that they will help me get her by paying 10000. This was a lot of money considering I lost just “50000”. Nonetheless I accepted to pay, but first deposit and then the balance later after getting her.
They requested a deposit of 5000 but we settled on 2500 and I handed that money.
On 9th August 2013 I was called and given the real number of the said Jane and also told that they now knew her house and location in place called Kiaritha in kerugoya. They further confirmed that she rarely resides there but spends more time in Mwea. On the same date I had a friend put a sim card in my phone call the said real number and recorded the voice. The voice was very similar to the voice of the 18th July 2013 recording. Though the call was brief since the friend pretended it was a wrong number.
On the same day we drove again to kerugoya and was shown her house. They sounded so sure that she was the one and that was the house. I kept on facilitating their movements. They kept on feeling as if I did not trust them but they promised to refund all money if she was not the one. I kept on sharing this information with police and now we could trace this new number to Mwea and Thiba areas. We agreed with the Kerugoya friends that once they spot her in her compound the call me even at night pick police and proceed there. I further requested the police to keep on tracing the number and notify when it’s spotted in Kerugoya.
After like two weeks my patience started wearing off and felt as if I was wasting money trailing her. I told my friend in Embu that we start looking for her in Mwea and Thiba areas.
So we started making trips to Mwea and Thiba area moving around houses, sharing the voice. I also contracted other guys to accompany us so that we can privately arrest her at sight.
I was moving around stopping the car and talking especially to women to try to identify the voice. The close that I went is when we met some some friends of my Embu friend who said that they thought they knew her. They asked us not to trust other guys we had contracted.
So at around six in the evening we released the guys and gave them some cash. We were left and promised that the said woman will be tricked into a pub…She was called and told of a deal and she agreed they meet in a pub……All this time is me to buy the beer and not drink….I was to remain in the car……The pub that they agreed to meet was somewhere in Thiba and it was poorly illuminated………I packed the car just near the entrance facing the front door of the pub…… I had promised that even if I see its her, I wont raise alarm since these Thiba friends would be dead meat….Unfortunately the lighting was poor and I could not see her face clearly as she entered the pub….But posture looked similar with the woman who conned me.
After they were seated in my Embu friend came back to the car and asked whether she was the one……I responded that I id not see the face clearly due to light.
There was no way I was going to enter into that pub so I had to think quick before they left…They were not to take much drink since it was my money……After one or two drinks they were to walk out of the pub……My friend came and told me to decide what to do……
When they stood and started walking out….I put the car lights on Full lights directed to other patrons even in the bar……She was the first to step out and said “haiya uyu atigire matawa me on” {This person left Lights on-refering to my Embu friend}…Luckly she came up to the drivers side and noticed there was a person in the car….She shook my hand….IT WAS NOT HER.
To this day I don’t know what I could have done if it was her……and I had promised to protect these Thiba Friends.
This method of going place to place had failed me….When I arrived home that evening I told my wife that I was no longer going to hunt for criminals. I was equally fearing for my life. So I called off the Mwea and Thiba hunts.
I was now left with just one lead of Kerugoya.
Month of August was over with nothing from Kerugoya or the police. It was like I had hit a dead end. This time the mobile phone numbers were off.
On Saturday 7th September 2013 my Kerugoya friends called and told me that they had confirmed that the Woman will be arriving on that day. It was like she was planning to relocate since she was coming to sell her sheep/goats. So I was advised to go with police on Sunday 8th September 2013 morning since she was to go to church at around 8.00am.
I tried to reach the investigating officer but he was in Nairobi. So I decided to talk with another CID officer on that Saturday who I had met during the many visits to the station. I told him of the assistance I wanted and even offered lunch.
He agreed that they will accompany me with another officer.
On Sunday 8th September 2013 at 7.00am I had parked the car outside the police station and called the officer several times before he picked up.
After he picked he told me that he was waiting for the other officer to come…I drove down the road to my store. After like 45 minutes I called him and he told me that they were not going to accompany me if I was not sure she was the one. He told me that I should first confirm and then call them. I felt so so bad.
I had to reach Kerugoya and it was past 8.00am and the friends in Kerugoya were telling me to hurry. I did not look for any other help but decided to go alone.
I think I did not drive but flew in my car to Kerugoya. Picked my friends and drove direct to Kerugoya Police Station. Went direct to the OCS {I cant remember his name—But we have nice Policemen—I think he was a Kalenjin}- He listened to my story and sympathized and immediately called two officers who were on a lorry leaving for another assignment.
I made it clear to him that I was just going to confirm if she was the one and if indeed she was the one I get her arrested.
I drove up to the junction leading to her house. My two friends went there first to confirm if she was indeed in the house. We were left with the officers in the car. They found that indeed that she was in the house but in the Bathroom according to her son. They informed us and vanished as we hurriedly proceeded to the house.
We knocked on the door and her son opened and told us that the mother was in the bathroom. He was told to tell her there are people who want to buy Sheep.
We waited outside for like 10 minutes.
Finally the Woman emerged……and our eyes met…she immediately bend down to put on shoes that were at the entrance of the house. SHE WAS THE ONE….I felt like hitting her on the head but my senses restrained me. As she was bending I just signaled the officer that she was the one using my head.
The officers identified themselves and told her that they wanted her to accompany them to the station.
She did not object but requested to be given 10 minutes to dress up. She was given the 10 minutes which was a big mistake by the officers.
I was happy and could not believe how I managed to get this woman while I had not even a Photo or a True name.
As we walked towards the car, I told the officers that I even had her real number. I flashed it and it rung in her purse. She could not believe it but looked very composed.
Her Mobile phone was taken from her.
I drove them back to Kerugoya Police Station where she identified herself as JANE NYAMBURA NGARI. Her home place is Rwathia in Murang’a but resides in Kerugoya. She was asked whether she has ever met me and said NO….
I called the DCIO Embu and informed him of the new development and he asked to talk with the arresting officer. They talked and agreed that he will send officers from Embu to go and pick up JANE.
When her phone was being scrolled down the contacts by the arresting officer, I noticed many contacts of Kerugoya Police, DO, Prisons……It was clear that this was a criminal. One of the officers even told me that He has been looking for this woman for so long.
The other officer also advised me” NOW WE HAVE TECHNOLOGY SO ALWAYS BE TAKING PHOTOS OF PEOPLE THAT YOU TRUST WITH YOUR MONEY-EVEN YOUR CUSTOMERS”.
I called my friends and paid them their due and gave them an extra Ksh 2000 for having doubted them. I have no doubt in my mind that if I have an issue in Kerugoya I know who to turn to.
I then drove back to Embu but on the way my instincts told me that the woman is well known there in Kerugoya and she might vanish.
Upon arriving in Embu, I called the DCIO and told him that I have decided to help the officers with my car to have the woman transferred to Embu soonest. He talked with the Investigating officer who agreed to accompany me at 2.00pm to pick her up
Let me post the other bit later which is a little bit scaring due to the Death threats.

HOW I WAS CONNED 1.2M PART 3

BY MOSES KARIUKI (real events, must read)
How I was Conned 1.2M Part 3 ,

At around 2.30pm I picked up a CID officer who was investigating the case and headed towards Kerugoya. Upon arriving Kutus we picked up another CID officer.
We arrived in Kerugoya Police Station at around 3.00pm. After some formalities there the officers picked up JANE {let us call her Jane, now since that is her real identity}.
From the police station we proceeded to her house for the search – {To me that search was not necessary since whatever she needed to conceal, she already did it when she requested for the 10 minutes to dress up}. I did not tell the officers this at this stage but I later told one officer that the way the arrest was made had a lot of loop holes.
As I was driving towards her house one officer asked he whether she knows me and she said she has never seen me. And she further said that I will tell her once we are in court, when the same officer interjected and said they will help me do so.
She was very composed and was even laughing at some points. She was asked by the officer whether she has other cases. She said “Mundu ndagaga machira” {One cannot lack cases}.
She said that cases are normal. Then one officer jokes that she had seen her in a court in Nairobi. She said yes she had a case in Makadara.
At that point I thought she was that confident to fill me with fear. I had not spoken a single word to her since her arrest.
When we arrived in her house the officers entered into an inner room that I assumed was a bedroom. I was left in her sitting room with her Grandson and his son who was actually like my age.
All this time I remained mum. She would come back to the sitting room now and then as the officers continued with the search in the inner rooms. At one time she emerged from the bedroom to the sitting room with spectacles and remained like that. I also forgot in Part 1 to say that when we met {4TH July 2013} she had dressed like an old village woman with a head scarf and red rubber shoes that costs at most Ksh 150-200. The following Day she had not changed the same clothes to convince me that she had spent the night in Embu.
On this day she was dressed in expensive clothes and had a weave. But there was no way she could hide her artificial teeth and the small growth on her nose.
She went back to the bedroom and re emerged again with the spectacles and now smiling to me and said in a low tone. “Riu tondu woka kungira guku kunene uguo na kiria kirakuria kiri nguoini ciaku na no giguthie na mbere na gukuria’’ {Now that you have come for me this far and what is feeding on you is still on your clothes and it will continue feeding on you} “Nawenda ngwire maingi ningukuira” {And if you want me to tell you more, I will tell you}. This scared me and it was directly a death threat……and since I had been warned by my wife and other friend to stop chasing these people, I felt like this was it.
But at this point I was moving on the same side with my instincts and so I was not going to back down. I had spent a lot of money looking for this woman and wasted a lot of my time. So her words scared me but I was not going to let her free.
I did not say a word and at most what I could have said is mmmm.
There was a small photo album that the grandson was holding and she kept herself busy asking the kid who were in the photos. I could here him say, Cucu, mum, uncle most of the instances.
After the search the officers emerged and placed some documents that they had found on the table. They then started sorting them and writing them down. There was a fake ID a title deed from Nyandarua, a piece of fake money note, A letter of her being summoned for threatening a person, then there was a Safaricom SIM card plate that the officers had found but in the process disappeared. They kept on asking her where it was. They searched again and did not find it.I suspected it might have been the plate that contained the sim card that she used as “Nesta”.
In short nothing directly related to my complaint was netted. If there was anything she could have hidden or destroyed by the time we ambushed her in the morning, and requested for 10 minutes to dress up.
At around 5.10pm they were done with the search and drove back to Embu. It was almost 6pm when we arrived in Embu Police Station.
The normal formalities were done; the thumb prints, and the normal profiling of the suspect.
After the profiling was done the woman was transferred to an inner room in the same office. I requested one officer who was a Kikuyu to have a minute with me outside, since I feared the woman would hear what I was about to say.
While outside I told the officer that there is something that Jane had told me in her house while they were doing the search. I told him the words in Kikuyu since he could hear .
I requested him to allow me talk with the woman and record everything that we are going to talk about. My intention was to have her investigated further on these threats.
I switched my Ideos phone into recording mode and entered the room where she was as the officer followed me. The officer asked her “Si mnaongea”? and she responded “Eeh”
We talked so much with her but what was so clear is that:
She assured me that I was not going to get my money back, and I should think more about taking the matter to court since we will all loose.
She further claimed that one of my brokers was paid Ksh 50,000 on the same day through Mpesa and the balance was paid in cash.
She also told me that when the plan was being plotted she was called and asked to con me and have me killed.
She said that she could only be able to con me but not to eliminate me.
She told me that I should think about how I am going to live in Embu since there are people who have sworn that I must be eliminated since I am spoiling their businesses.
I did not take everything that she was telling me to be the truth but I listened.
She also talked about a case that she had mentioned in the car. She told me that there is a time that she helped a person who was about to be killed and the person ended up going to report the clue that he was given to the police.
She told me that they cased a lot with the person from 2009 in Makadara Law courts and she was let free like two years ago. {I was further to search online and found that there was a case CRC 439/09 Rep v/s Jane Nyambura Ngari}- It was there in the Kenya Law website but nowadays I do not see it} so there was a very high probability she was telling me the truth about this case.
She further told me that they were so many people in this plot and she only got Ksh 100,000 after all that work. She also told me that the best she could do is refund me the Ksh 100,000 in bits and then show me the other people who shared that money but not through the police.
She assured me that she will never admit it in court that she conned me.
If you will be able to read the whole conversation that we had, you will see how confident she was. She was talking to me just like an old woman would talk to a small kid. She was not scared at all.
I will upload the video and if you can read this Kikuyu transcript though not so p

Buying land in Kenya is so hectic. I was once reading on the correct process of genuinely buying land sijui name search survey, board meeting, application etc. If am ever buying land I will rather just look for a genuine lawyer who specialises in such matters and leave it all to him. The narrator seems pretty educated but he still falls into this Web of traps. Wazee sometimes it’s good to admit ignorance and use people with much better knowledge.

Aai ni Friday bana

this Kikuyu transcript though not so perfect you can get all what happened when we talked.
