How will we benefit from our oil?

While the rest of the country laments and marvels at romantic escapades and misadventures of prominent kenyan leaders and slay queens, i believe that we, Talkers should engage in serious debate on pertinent issues affecting our country.

Of interest is our oil. Someone educate the village on how revenues from our oil will be shared between Tullow and GoK. I am finding very disturbing information about this.

It all starts with our initial discovery of oil announced by the former President Emilio in March 2011. More prospecting of the oil would continue to discover more oil to make the venture economically viable. During the announcement, Hon. Kiraitu said the following:

Two years after the find, as if on a cue, government hurriedly takes up the stake by Essar in the refinery at changamwe, and decides to halt refinery operations. Was it a move to ensure that we do not refine our oil? The excuse made was that it is inefficient to refine oil at the facility; why not improve efficiency? Why not begin the process of equipping the refinery with modern machinery?

Years after the prospecting and finding of more oil wells, even after exporting the first batch of crude oil, Kenyans are yet to be informed of the revenue sharing agreements with Tullow oil. The secrecy is breeding more suspicion on how the deal was entered into. Were a few politicians paid off to sell our oil at a throw away price?

Note the arrogance with which Petroleum Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau dismisses the calls for transparency. It is important to know that even Ghana shares the oil revenue sharing agreements with the public; why not Kenya?

When we will take over exploration and mining of the oil? What steps are in place to ensure that NOCK (or any other state entity) takes over mining and exportation of the oil? Because i am uncomfortable with the composition of the prospectors - a number of American, British and Canadian companies in our oil business.

Then there was a gentleman who was robbed his discovery rights by government machinery.

Oil huwa ka curse first of all it makes people lazy af esp locals i wish we invested in better things like technology

there is only two ways around it either tukabli kufirwa na the multinationals ama democracy/terrorism will be introduced.heri tufirwe,we have reached here bila io oil na almost every kenyan anajua itaibiwa tu.

Unless you’re a member of the core parasite families of this country-i.e Kenyattas, Mois et al, hiyo mafuta sio yako hata kama wewe ni raia wa Turkana.
