A 34-year-old man has
been jailed for one year without an option of a fine after
he was caught red-handed by his wife transporting stolen
goods on a motorcycle.
The goods worth Sh49, 450 comprised of 6,000 empty
bags, three packets of sweets, a dozen matchboxes, a
dozen bottles of perfume and three packets of doughnuts
belonging to Simon Ngetich, a trader at Chepseon village.
The accused, Geoffrey Cheruiyot, pleaded guilty to
stealing on November 6 at 10pm.
Ngetich told the court that he had locked his kiosk the
previous night and went home at around 9 pm only to
find the shop broken into the following morning. He
immediately reported the matter to Chepseon Police
Station and a search for the thief started.
Cheruiyot’s wife later on spotted her husband at the
market center on a boda boda with the stolen goods and
stopped him. He attempted to run but was caught by a
mob which beat him before police intervened.
In his mitigation, Cheruiyot said that Ngetich owed him
some money and he had not repaid him prompting him
to pay himself by stealing his stock. He wanted to sell
them and recover his money.
The magistrate sentenced him to 12 months in prison.
