Dr Manduku said improved cargo clearance had boosted revenue collection. “In July alone, the total revenue generated from cargo clearance at the port was Sh50 billion, up from Sh30 billion. On average, KPA’s monthly revenue stands at Sh30 billion,” Dr Manduku said.
There is something am not getting or understanding here, these KES 50b revenue, is it what KRA collects at the port or KPA’s own separate revenues? But since Manduku says it’s revenue from clearing cargo, then I will assume it’s what KRA collects at the port, while a few other billions “leaks” through corrupt channels.
So here is the math: $496m is equivalent to KES 49b or rounded off to KES 50b. in a year that’s KES 600b revenue from cargo clearance. That’s a cool $6b.
Why can’t the govt just set aside a quarter of this, i.e $1.5b to pay off loans without burdening us with punitive taxes and unpopular IMF demands? $1.5b annually will pay off the current $25b external debt in 15 - 20years, or even less as revenues grow in future due to increased efficiency in trade.
on the other hand…
According to Trading Economics, Kenya’s revenue in June was KES 1.5 trillion, or about $15b. The combined revenues from January to June 2018 is a whopping KES 6.9 trillion shillings, about $69b… … where do these monies disappear to? or are these figures wrong? This is enough money to cover the current 2018/2019 budget bila kutusumbua na VAT ya petrol.
if half year revenues are nearly $70b, my layman assumption is that the govt will collect a staggering $140b this year… This is more than enough to cover the current 2018/2019 budget as well as Uganda, TZ, Rwanda and Burundi budgets na tubakie na change… where does this money go? or this figures are wrong and misleading?

However, this snapshot from CBKs data shows that the Trading economics data is correct https://www.centralbank.go.ke/uploads/monthly_economic_indicators/530403626_MEI%20April%202018.pdf

A trend I have noted with this chart is that July revenues are astonishingly low, then the figures rise steadily and peak after March/April… How can the govt collect KES 1.3 trillion in June 2017 and then KES 95 bilion the next month, July 2017 ? That is a huge drop!
Anyway, my assumptions are very amateurish, expert opinions and insults are welcome.
