@Deorro you said: "No sane studio will
use an imac pro as a rendering station."

Sijui mbona unadharau Imac. The Social Network, John Carter, 300 and No Country for Old Men are all big-name films cut on a Mac using Final Cut pro. Which means they rendered sequences using that very same Imac.

A 100 million dollars blockbuster film starring Will Smith from last year called Focus was edited and rendered on an Imac. Even the effects were done on an Imac. Ndio hio link :http://iphone.appleinsider.com/arti...will-smith-edited-entirely-in-final-cut-pro-x

Kama 300 ilikuwa edited on an Imac why would anyone think lowly of an Imac?

Yeah but it depends na kazi wanafanya. You do not expect a guy in River road to be using a Mac or high end PC to do a simple task that a pentium PC can do. If they were rendering a 4k videos then they would actually invest in a high end pc. Hao sio kama watu wengine especially wa media unapata mtu anatumia Mac kusoma news pekee thus wasting the potential of that Mac and also wasting alot of cash purchasing a machine a newscaster doesn't need.
So umeitikia pc huungua? that was the point.

Mac Setups: A High-End Animation Studio
OSXDaily

Have you ever wondered exactly what hardware was used to create the stunning visual effects, animation, and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) you see in in movies, video games, and commercials? Well, this weeks Mac setup will show you. Much more than a single workstation, it’s an entire Mac-based animation studio in Sheffield, UK! From a group of maxed out Retina iMacs to an amazing Mac Mini render-farm, this office is a Mac fans dream.

Let’s get to it and learn about the production hardware and software used in a high-end animation studio.

What do you use your Apple gear for?
We are an animation studio and create pretty much every different type of animation you can imagine. This involves everything from the scripting side, to character animation to the creation of 3D models and final rendering. We also create concept art and do editing for the films we make. Here is a link to our website where we have a showreel that showcases some of our recent work:

http://www.lunaranimation.com

(Showreel embedded further below for easy viewing)

What hardware is used in the animation studio? Why choose that particular kit?
PRODUCTION MACHINES:
As our main production machines we use maxed out 5K Retina iMac’s with 32GB of RAM. They’re the fastest single core machine on the market and their beautiful display is perfect for creating digital content, a lot of which now needs to be 4K. We chose the Retina over the mac pro’s as we wouldn’t have been able to have 5K displays for the same kind of money. The 5K third party monitors look terrible on your desk and their colour reproduction is always questionable and when we purchased the iMac’s on release last year, you would have had to pay a similar amount of money just for a 5K third party display. In fact on just checking the prices now the Dell monitor is still £2000 (~$3100). We also kitted the iMac’s out with 500GB SSD’s as we’ve used the fusion drives in the past and they can be slow if you’re working with large files and more annoyingly they make more noise. With our use being for studio content creation all of our content lives on an external 20TB thunderbolt drive, so we don’t need to keep that much content installed locally. Also for the rare use of installing windows (Mainly for after work gaming) having the SSD meant that we would have the speed of the SSD on the windows side as well, which once you’re used to is hard to go back.

Main Production Machines:

We also have some standard iMac’s that are the previous generation, also maxed out that are hooked up to the retina iMac’s for use as a second display when they’re not in use as a machine for freelancers working within the studio. When these iMac’s are being used as second displays or not actively being used by someone, they’re also able to join the render farm and contribute to rendering out the animation.

Secondary Production Machines:

  • 2 x iMac (late 2012) – 32GB RAM – 3TB Fusion Drives – 3.4Ghz Quad core i7

RENDER FARM
We also have a Mac Mini render farm, which we use to render out animation from the productions we work on. Each Mac Mini had to be sourced from resellers and second hand sources as Apple downgraded the recent refreshed models to dual core machines that are significantly less powerful than the previous generation. For our use these need to have fast multithreading to essentially crunch through rendering the animation. We decided to use mac minis as they’re very small, taking up little space in the studio and have a good cost to processing power ratio. They’re also easy enough to replace and upgrade and it wouldn’t be hard when it comes time to upgrade, for us to sell the models we have and still retain most of their value. These Quad Core i7 machines are becoming very hard to find and can cost more than Apple originally charged when looking on eBay.

Mac Mini Renderfarm:

  • 14 x Mac Mini – 16GB RAM – 128GB SSD’s – 2.6 Ghz Quad Core i7

SERVER:
All of our content is stored and managed by our server. For that we use a Mac mini server. It’s connected to all the content which is stored on a Lacie Big 20TB drive via Thunderbolt. We utilise all of the USB outputs on the server using link bonded ethernet so we can get the maximum amount of throughput via gigabit ethernet to aid in multiple computers being able to access the the server without the limitation of one ethernet cable. The server is also connected to the internet and organises all of our online backup and local backup. For local backup we also have a 20TB Drobo which backs up our main server drive incase of any issues it can be hot swapped so we don’t lose production time.

Mac Mini Server:

WIFI / PRODUCTION BACKUP:
We use a time capsule for our main production machines backup. This is the great thing about limiting the size of the Retina iMac’s to 500GB, as it allows us to back up all of our content to a single 3TB Time Capsule. This also doubles up as our office wifi.

EXTRAS:
We have plenty of other tech related gadgets that aid us in the creation of animation here at the studio. We have one final piece of apple tech that we would struggle without which is an iPad Air 2, we use this for controlling our premiere edit when reviewing content in stereoscopic 3D. When reviewing one of our films on our TV wearing 3D glasses it’s hard to move between clips and analyse the shots that we’re working on, we use an app called CTRL+Console. So we can review without the need to switch out of full screen mode. The TV we have is mainly used for reviewing content we create and with one of our services being stereoscopic it was important to ensure we have a 3D TV but one that also produces 4K, so we are able to review the full resolution in stereoscopic 3D. We decided to go with the Sony Bravia as they have excellent colour reproduction compared to a lot of other TV’s. Finally all of our films have surround sound and it was important that we would be able to review this content and future content effectively. We decided to purchase an ONKYO Dolby Atmos setup so we can move into mixing for even more immersive content.

What are the essential apps for an animation studio like this?
We use a variety of software for all of the different aspects of what we do. There are however 5 key pieces of software that we use and could not do what we do without, these are:

We also use other other software which are also extremely useful and are used on a daily basis:

Inakaa you have not owned a computer of any kind ikupatie issues. I have witnessed a hard disk in a relatively new HP laptop explode. Huyo jamaa laptop ili explode ikiwa na kazi ya mtu akahepa ocha to avoid the client. This is a reality these things were built by man.

And the internet is full of troubleshooting websites with articles on melted wires and other components e.g.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/317495-28-melted-cable-help

So I don't know what the argument is. These things happen bios or no bios. Hio mambo ya PC kushutdown haikuhappen harddisk ililipuka.

Lakini hiyo ni small money to Hollywood movie budgets which are >$200 million
Yes. Cameras rarely put a dent in the budget. But many big hollywood films, if they decide to use a red(rarely) will use a higher specced red(super customized for the movie they’re shooting, making the price go higher).
Also, many times they simply rent. Huku Kenya, we just buy and use it like a workhorse and also rent them out.

The hobbit was shot in 5K, 3D around 2011 on the Red Epic cameras which were relatively new at the time.

They used 48 Red Epic cameras. 48. Na moja ilikuwa about Kshs. 4 million at the time, kichwa pekee. Granted most times movie companies buy and also rent gear. It's a mix.

This is from one of director Peter Jackson's production diaries where he explains 3D use in The Hobbit and shows the viewers his 48 red Epic cameras.

The guy in that link looks like he didn't know what he was doing. Inakaa alikuwa ana connect vitu tu bila kuelewa the purpose of those connections on the motherboard. Hio ya HP laptop mpaka ichunguzwe maybe kulikuwa na power surge.

is this osX vs Windows
or hardware vs hardware

Incase of Pajero vs Probox, Pajero is made by Mistubishi while Probox is made by Toyota. Completely different manufacturers.

In computers, here is what sheeple don't get. Or say, people like you who don't get tech. Computers are assembled. If it is Hardware vs Hardware, let us not kid each other. There are only two main CPU manufacturers. Intel and AMD. There are Only two GPU manufacturers. Nvidia and AMD.

The AMD threadripper 1950X is beaten by the Intel i9 7900X in some aspects but beats it in others. However, the threadripper price gives the best performance ratio compared to Intel i9 7900X.

The AMD Vega 64 is actually shitted on by the GTX 1080TI from NVIDIA. It doesn't beat the 1080TI in anything.

For storage, NAND flash is made by Samsung, Micron, Hynix, Toshiba and Sandisk.

RAM is made by Several companies and none is APPLE

I hope you now understand what I mean. Apple doesn't make Hardware. They simply assemble stuff into cases. You can always use the best hardware to create the best PC ever. They have no input in creating better hardware. The 1080TI will always be better than the AMD 64 in the IMac Pro no matter what! Apple doesn't do magic to make the threadripper 1950X better than the i9 7900X.

But am guessing these are new terms that you just heard. You were arguing based on what you heard people say and your feelings. A shocker right? The argument is AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia.
Bravo!

Stop twisting things. You said very clearly there's a safeguard which should prevent any overheating or surge event. And you said very clearly that wires melting are unheard of and should not occur at all since this is not a 1985 machine or so Deorro finished. Mbona zinachomeka basi????

Links zimajaa kwa net of cables melting. Nini wewe.

Kwanza I put that very particular link because in my earlier comment which Deorro lambasted na hata wewe ukacheka nilikuwa nimesema, mtu akijetengenezea PC wire zinaungua. Na yeye Deorro akasema that can't happen in todays world because the PC bios senses overheating and shuts down the machine.
Question is, si umeona wire zimechomeka? Why the sarcastic laugh then?

Why didn't that young man's computer shut down to prevent further damage?

How would the system shut itself down when it short circuits even before it loads the bios due to shoddy wiring? The biggest reason those wires melt is because of shoddy wiring which leads to those wires short circuiting. A properly configured PC will not overheat because the pro knows you must connect cpu cooling fans. Pia unafaa kujua out there kuna wajuaji wengi wanashikanisha vitu they do not understand which leads to alot of problems. Most short circuits are caused by ppl leaving loose screws

1. Well the fact is that you can develop iOS apps using dot NET. I did not mention VMs as an alternative.

2. If you are so sure about your experience then why do you contradict yourself? Computers designed for professional work are expensive regardless of brand. Lenovo's flagship laptop is priced at 2000 dollars so your argument is moot.
1. Don’t be petty. No serious iOS developer uses dotnet. If you know any iOS developer without a mac, give us their names and apps on app store. I am talking about prominent apps here.

Remember, just to have your apps on the store costs you $100 per year. That’s why Apple store is mainly for serious developers, where owning a mac is their least of worries...

2. I am talking about my experience as an iOS developer with apps on Apple store. The mac I had to buy to make same android apps cost me 4 times the PC. Of course, other people may have different experiences.

If it were not for privacy reasons, I would have given the link to my Apple store apps. You know, unlike Google Play, Apple conditions are so stringent that many of us developers have to use our own names to sell our apps on their store. So my apple account is in my real name, unlike my Google Play account that is in my company’s name.

That is all well and good brother. My issue is, then what was with the sarcastic laugh? You haven't proved my earlier argument wrong!

Kwa hii comment yako saa hii, unaji contradict juu umerudia chenye nilisema kwa ile comment ya deorro kule juu. Ama labda hunielewi.

Linganisha hii comment yako ya kwanza:

"In this age of thermal cooling and pc
cases with multiple fans bado kuna
watu wanafikiria pc components are
melting"

na vile umesema saa hii hapo juu.

Yaani, mimi nilisema:

"Hebu sasa ingia the professional world
e.g. TV where you are live 24/7. Those
machines run throughout every day of the
week. Huwezi weka machine ati unatoa
mabati ati wire zinamelt. "Wapi nani
atengeneze?"
Ati kubahatisha na news ni live."

Alafu wewe you've just repeated this statement above but with different words :

""The biggest reason those wires melt is
because of shoddy wiring which leads to
those wires short circuiting."

Which is why I ask, WHY THE SARCASTIC LAUGH na umerudia tu vile nilisema mbeleni? Which was: wires melt because an individual will make a shitty hackintosh.

You laughed sarcastically yet you've just repeated what I said earlier.

Thing is hazi melt juu ya over heating PC. From the earlier statement you never specified what causes them to melt so we assumed you were meaning due to overheating not short circuiting. And by the way everything can short circuit even a Mac.

You are just arguing for the sake of it. Of the top of my head Slack and Pinterest are two "serious" apps built using dot Net.

A foolish statement that deserves nothing but contempt.

I am talking about my experience as an iOS developer with apps on Apple store. The mac I had to buy to make same android apps cost me 4 times the PC. Of course, other people may have different experiences.
Still talking out of your backside:rolleyes:
