National Highway 22 is one of the world’s deadliest roads. Located in India, the road has dangerous cliffs, poor bridges and tunnels, heavy traffic and very bad conditions. It has a poor maintenance and hazardous driving conditions all through the year.
National Highway 22 is 459 km (285 mi) long. The road starts asphalted in Ambala, a city in Ambala district in the state of Haryana. Suddenly, arriving to Kalka, in the Panchkula district of Haryana, in the foothills of the Himalayas, the road becomes a mountain road with extensive hairpin turns. The conditions at this point are extreme. Heavy traffic, dangerous cliffs, poor bridges and tunnels on a very narrow road poorly surfaced.

Do not travel this pass in severe weather conditions. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. It has a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards, and driving under these conditions, can be extremely challenging.
After Kalka, the road winds up to the Himachal Pradesh and ends in Khab, a small village near the India-Tibet border, on the Shipki La Pass. Avalanches, lanslides and heavy snowfalls can sometimes block some sections of the road. It has a poor maintenance and hazardous driving conditions all through the year. The road is still a lifeline for the local people.

Your wheels will be astounded at the wonderful views of the mountains spread out before you! They are terrible for drivers who are prone to vertigo. In many places the road is bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge is a Japanese rigid frame bridge with an unusually high span that–from certain angles–makes the structure look like a roller coaster for cars. In reality, the 144-foot-tall bridge features grades no steeper than 6.1% (long lens photography exaggerates the incline). The bridge connects the cities of Matsue andSakaiminato in Western Japan. The bridge’s high span is designed to accommodate boat traffic, as Sakaiminato is a major fishing port

The Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop Bridge, in Japan, is an example of how to build a bridge from one mountainside to another when the sides of the mountain are so steep that it is not possible to build a road at the same elevation on both sides

I once drove this road in Al Soudah in Saudi Arabia during a freak sandstorm, most scaring moment in my driving history, Actros trucks driven at break neck speeds by Pakistani and Afghanis were overtaking me on the steep decline in near zero visibility conditions.

Rode in a convoy on this road in Jalalabad, we called it JBad, it was a really dangerous place to live in, we came under heavy rocket attack from the hills above us. The convoy lost 2 MRAP’s and 4 military personnel.
