I graduated few days ago with a second class degree in Maths & Computer Science. A friend has told me he might get me a starting place at an insurance company.
I understand that they outsource most of their tech jobs, this is making me wonder what can a degree in maths/Computer science do at an insurance company. I have little to zero understanding of insurance and business.

Saccos are losing Sh72 million daily to cybercrime and related activities, according to Internet Solutions Kenya Bright Gameli has said.
Kenya suffered a Ksh21 billion loss on cyber security crimes according to 2017 Seriamu report on the status of the Kenya Cyber security. In turn, the central Bank of Kenya (CBK) proposed implementation of new cyber security rules that would see the cost go down, or done away with.
I was doing an internship at a small company where we were developing websites and app for 4 months, Well, I can say most of the stuffs are what we learnt in college.
saccos karibu zote zinaibiwa Kenya. developers wa hizo softwares zao wameweka backdoors na 5pm milango main ikifungwa ndio wengine wanaingia job remotely. if you know u know.
There are trade offs to be made…amepata kitu ya kifanya within days of graduating…as opposed to staying for years before finding something that suites him 100% to me thats a bird at hand.
You look like you already have an attitude, you underestimate the unemployment rates in this country… Tarmac for 2 years halafu ukuje tuongee. Utatamani hiyo insurance chance na utakosa. First degeee, as I was told many years ago while in college, is not a specialization. It only proves that you are trainable. We have engineering graduates working as bank tellers, at some point Dr Jean Mwai a dentist was the EABL marketing manager.
On a different note, what’s Maths & Computer science? Hizi university siku hizi zitatuonyesha mambo. I saw Maseno has Bachelor of Medicine with IT.
I understand that they outsource most of their tech jobs, this is making me wonder what can a degree in maths/Computer science do at an insurance company. I have little to zero understanding of insurance and business.
I am sure insurance companies use computers at some point in their day to day work - of course your skills in computer and maths can be applied at an insurance company.
No, its not attitude. I believe you misunderstood me. I will work on any given job. Currently I’m working on a mjengo to save money for clothes and fare, incase niitwe interview.
The thing is, naogopa I might fail my friend kwa kukosa kujua the whats in insurance field.
Its half Math and Half Computer science degree. Its not just a locally created course. It is offered in most international colleges.
The thing with it, you’ll study a lot of Mathematics, Applied, Pure and Calculus. I didn’t learn any real life application of the Maths part. At least for computers I have some coding skills
assuming you are genuine in your query, there is nothing to worry about in the insurance field, if its a starting position umetafutiwa - if ou happen to be placed in the IT department all that will be needed from you is just basic understanding of computers, you will most likely just be helping out with the day to day IT works in any typical office and sorting out user queries, nothing big especially since you mention you have some coding knowledge.
If you happens to be placed on the Insurance business side, you will most likely start out at data entry, filling in the claim forms into some system also nothing to be worried about - I am sure you will not be asked to do client insurance product presentations and the likes.
just go and learn as much as possible, pata experience, at this stage that is the most important thing.
