There are various ways to argue this possible reality. Looking at history we can see the rise and fall of major civilizations (especially Roman Empire) and the factors-geopolitical and cosmic-that helped spur thier dominance and likewise decimation. Just like pandemics extinguished the Roman Empire, Galactic events are bound to happen in 21st century, creating calamities that could take out the western economies.
