The Cabinet has allocated Sh25 billion for free day secondary education to be rolled out from January next year.

Free day secondary education was one of the Jubilee government’s pledges to the electorate.

The allocation is contained in a mini-budget approved on Thursday at a Cabinet meeting. Some of the cash will go towards infrastructure to accommodate more learners in the programme which targets to achieve 100 per cent transition of pupils from primary to secondary schools.

The fee structure for different categories of public secondary schools indicates that the government pays a subsidy of Sh12,870 per year while parents pay Sh53,554 for those in boarding schools.

For those in day schools, a parent is supposed to pay Sh9,370.

Parents with children in special needs schools are required to pay Sh37,210 while the government pays Sh32,600.

“In 2018, the Form One intake will cater for 1,003,552 learners sitting their KCPE this year. Of this 903,200 will join public schools while 100,322 will join private ones,” a statement from the Cabinet said.

Great. NASA January projects being approved is a sign of good things to come.
