Kenya "Liz" gang rape: Justice for Liz as rapists jailed

Busia Chief Magistrate Margaret Wambani found Owino Oduor, Fredrick Owin Odhiambo and Vincent Ouma guilty of gang-raping and causing grievous bodily harm to Liz and convicted them to 15 and seven years in jail respectively for the two offences.
Liz, her family and human rights campaigners welcomed the verdict.
To refresh your memory:
Liz, then 16, was accosted by a group of six young men as she returned from her grandfather’s funeral in Tingolo, Busia County, on the night of June 26, 2013.
After gang-raping her, they pushed her into a pit latrine before escaping.
Three of the rapists were arrested the following day and taken to Tingolo AP Camp where they were ordered to cut grass after which they were released.

Liz was also punished for “venturing out in the night’’ and was ordered to clean an office at the Administration Police Camp.

The sexual and physical violence left the teenager, then in Standard Seven, wheel-chair bound and with a leaking bladder after developing double obstetric fistula and a spinal injury.
She was eventually admitted to Gyno-Care Fistula Centre in Eldoret. She recovered and returned to school after more than a year out.
Her plight was highlighted by the Daily Nation’s DN2 on October 8, 2013.

The Nation Media Group started a campaign, Stand Up for Liz, Help Her Walk Again, which received support locally and internationally, raising Sh890,000 for her medical kitty.

…hizo majina joh, from which region do they hail from?

That is indeed a welcomed move but in no way equitable to the damage caused.

Let’s just hope their time in jail will be so rough that they will not come out alive.

we can also hope that atwoli, njamba huthu, junkie and co get jailed in the same jail as the 3 so that they can also recieve a measure of what they gave

At least a step forward.

How old were these animals?I think over 20 years of receiving it in the rear would be fairer.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko wants the 22-year
sentence granted to three men found guilty of gang-raping and causing bodily harm to a 16-year-old girl enhanced. In a statement, the DPP says that
although the sentence given by a Busia chief magistrate implied that
justice had been rendered to the victim, the verdict was extremely
lenient to the accused persons. Mr Tobiko said the sentence failed
to reflect the seriousness of the gang-rape offence that had caused severe bodily harm to the girl,
identified as Liz in order to protect her identity.
While commending the
prosecution, four lobby groups and the media for their support in the case, he expressed his disappointment with the fact that other accused persons had not been arrested and charged.
