Kenyan Mechanics

Accompanied a friend to the mechanic’s place to have his car fixed on some issue about the car stalling when the engine gets hot.
The mech rushed to check the fuel filter and pump, akakuta ni mpya.
Then checked the exhaust system and removed the scrubbers (I guess) from it, mbicha attached. All the while I am asking him to explain what he is doing and why, the reason and science of removing the scrubbers mpaka akaniuliza "si uko na maswali mengi, unataka nikuachie hii kazi? "
Lucky the car wasn’t mine, angejibu kila swali kabla aguze kitu. @introvert @Luther12 what is the effect of removing such from the exhaust system?

Hao mechanics watakula panono leo. Wamepata fala wa kutulia. Effects vary from car to car. Wacha rafikiyo atwambie vile kutaenda.

Hiyo ni Mufler gari ikisha fika/land Kenya hutolewa reason being air resistance or backpressure makes it hard for exhaust fumes to exit a cylinder, and it robs your engine of potential power. When an exhaust pipe is too small or a muffler has a lot of air resistance, this can cause nasty backpressure.

@Luther12 they kept on insisting that the scrubbers are blocked and that’s the cause ati because the car is built for the European market and their fuels which burn cleaner

I’m not convinced. Muffler ingekuwa na issues taa ya check engine ingekuwa on pale kwa dashboard.

@Bantu why did the engineers put it there in the first place?

Catalytic convertor to minimize emissions.

Did your pal have engine diagnostics done?

Your place is in the kitchen, na hiyo kitu ume shikilia usi mwachie… Huuzwa

what was the error code of the computerized diagnostics?

Don’t think there was a diagnostics, or rather haven’t asked @Bantu what’s the value of it?

Sidhani kuna mtu atakwambia value. I can only surmise that looking at the extents to which they’re willing to go to get it, it must be worth a lot. Word is that some ‘chinese’ ndio wanauziwa.

Usilolijua lazima ulipie.
I don’t trust mechanics 100% but at times from the experiences they go through you have to accept there are things they know that you don’t.

Didn’t you find it a bit odd that gari ina-overheat and this guy zeroed in on the exhaust?

Labda sio hiyo. Ni sensors za exhaust na za air intake (throttle)

Hiyo kitu iko na bei, ni thousands kadha… Sijui hutumiwa kufanya nini. But musi mwachie… Thank me later

If your mech can’t explain what he’s doing and why, shauri yako.
2009, on a flight to Msa I meet a rally driver who makes me understand that the efficiency of an engine depends a lot on how easily air flows throw it.
I am introduced to a concept called porting and the debate about whether I need a catalytic converter on my jalopy. I do not need one.
Next day, first agenda was to discard the RX7’s catalytic converter. Through pipe pap. Hadi in between gears there’s a flame in the exhaust.
Hakuna makanika anaenda mbinguni. Chagua mmoja na ukufe na yeye.
