Kenya's exploitative betting earnings compared to "wealthy" California and UK

California: GDP 3 trillion dollars
Population 40 million
GDP per capita: 76,000 dollars
Earnings from the State Lottery 2018: 6.3 billion dollars

United Kingdom: GDP 2.7 trillion dollars
Population 66 million
GDP per capita: 40,000 dollars
Earnings from the State Lottery 2018: 7 billion dollars

Kenya: GDP 76 billion dollars
Population 50 million
GDP per capita: 1,700 dollars
Earnings from Sport Pesa 2018: 2 billion dollars

Judging by our earnings, we are obviously spending more money as a nation on gambling as a fraction of the GDP. We should be spending about 70 million shillings

Why do you call it exploitative. Is a gun held to your head to bet?

People who can hardly afford to lose 2 billion dollars are trashing their money

Get the fools before they wise up.

Your conclusion is biased based on the figures you have presented…

What I surmise from the figures is that there are no better opportunities to ‘invest and grow’ money in Kenya… 66 million UK citizens are able to generate 2.7 trillion dollars while 40 million California residents generate 3 trillion dollars, whereas 50 million Kenyans only generate 76 billion dollars…

Politicians are the ones exploiting Kenyans, not the betting industry…

California residents and UK citizens are lucky.

Yeah. But the world is not perfect. The same way someone making 1 million will spend 150k in a Runda Mansion (15% of income) while a watchman earning 20k spends 5k on accommodation (25% of income).

There’s no point in arguing numbers here. The cost of living in LA or NY is about 3x than living in Kansas City, Chicago or Houston (etc.).

In Kenya, we have farms and wildlife. If you get too hungry, you can chase a wild chicken and roast it on firewood. You can translate any way you want…

You have really gone off on a tangent here, bro. Nothing about my post relates to comparison of cost of living. You really are under no obligation to insert your opinion on every issue

Never mind. Have a good weekend.

Can you calculate Brookside’s earning compared to our GDP. Utapona how that milk company has screwed us.

What you are forgetting is that the men who gamble in Kenya are also the poor ones meaning that money that could have improved their life, been invested or spent giving family a better standard of life. Since this makes up majority of the population, betting firms are impoverishing Kenya. Sometimes back I quoted numbers like daily cash spent on gambling is 0.9B while winnings are 7M daily. If the state became a monopoly in gambling our loans would be paid up in full in the next 5 years. Such money should not go to people who don’t even pay much tax.

Exploitative my foot! I don’t bet myself. I don’t understand why some people gamble away their earnings.

Even in those countries majority of gamblers are not the wealthy. Your figures shows mkenya ankanyagwa from all angles.
for example hautawai ona a US mbirrionaire in a big casino akingangana with slot machine.Hizi vitu ni za peasants.

The problem we should be addressing is not betting addiction but greed, we elect leaders and their first agenda is to increase their salaries and allowances, the ones entrusted with public funds make them their personal funds to do as they wish.

The youth also wish to enjoy the same life style our leaders are living considering some of the leaders have no skills to earn a living other than stealing. Betting comes across as viable alternative that is self indulging and not criminal but unfortunately the investors in this business are cut from the same cloth as our leaders. How many of the 12 Million account holders in betting companies are in any form of employment?

Recruitment for census jobs is either in progress or completed, majority of the people likely to be recruited are people already in employment earning a salary at the expense of jobless youths who find solace in betting vice. Whether the investor in betting business is a foreigner or a citizen makes no difference, they are all rapists of our economy.

Kenyans are generally greedy, be it promise of riches through betting or plunder of public resources through leadership or even conmen, they will fall in the snares of exploitative forces.

If you can go take a trip to Vegas to gamble or gamble at a casino even in Kenya you are definitely not a peasant. In Kenya even children depending on parents go to play on slot machines. None of the people I saw winning lotto were peasants they were middle class people unlike here in Kenya where even casual laborers, nduthi, pple who work at fast food joints, watu wa mkokoteni as in as long as you are a football fan. It’s very very bad. And it’s exacerbated by poverty bcz the more hopeless you are the more vulnerable you are to get rich quick schemes

I would recommend you watch Ross kemp Las vegas. In this documentary even the homeless people use the little cash they have to gamble on the slot machines. Actually some kids in the West are also gambling, but their form of gambling is a feature called ‘loot boxes’ in video games. This ‘loot boxes’ feature has even forced some governments in the West to start looking into the video game industry with the aim of putting in regulations to control micro transactions.

Even dating sites. Look at Badoo.
