Android boxes and kodi are not synonymous.
Kodi is just a value addition, just like Netflix.
Android box turns your TV into a super computer where you can browse the internet(hence streaming through the sites you mentioned whose their problem is too many spammy ads), Skype, Facebook, tweet and even k/talk.
Through the box you can also download serious games and play them online. Its an invaluable gadget and a must have. The only downside is dependence on reliable bandwidth.
Forget the dead links coz the alternatives are always there.
