Small businesses in the informal sector will begin to pay 15 per cent of their single business permit license fee as presumptive tax from January 1.

The tax will be paid before the renewal of their single business permits or trading licenses from their respective county governments.

According to Kenya Revenue Authority Domestic tax chief manager Judith Njagi the tax will be levied on an annual basis.

“The new tax is meant to enlarge the tax bracket in the informal sector, it excludes property owners, companies and any other firms registered for Value Added Tax,” Njagi said.

Currently, businesses which largely fall within the informal sector are paying three per cent of their gross sales as Turnover tax on a quarterly basis. Presumptive tax is set to replace the Turnover tax.

Businesses targeted by this tax are those with an annual turnover of between Sh500,000 and Sh5 million.

It’s long overdue. Some of these so-called “small businesses” are worth millions!!

It does not make sense to collect billions of taxes while almost half of it is stolen. They should make each and every coin accountable before exploiting new revenue streams. This government is lazy and is only collecting taxes like the mafioso’s

Give unto caesar what belongs to him .

Silipi.

Seconded!

Hapo sioni shida honestly. Informal sector makes good money, not all of them but still.

Sometimes I really think you live in utopia.
:D:D:D.
I will not pay until I see some prosecutions…major ones sii hizi za peni ndogo.

watu walipe ushuru

I had not being paying or filing returns since 2013 but this year they nabbed me.
I was hit with tax arrears, fines and penalties for the whole period.
If you know there’s a chance of them coming across your business transactions, I would advice you to pay but file your expenses in such a manner that you are left with only minimal taxes to pay otherwise if you wait for them to do the calculations for you utalia.

Seal all the loopholes and i will gladly pay otherwise i will exploit all the avenues to not pay…

How do they nab people? That’s what I wanna know. Coz mimi nimeandika occupation “housewife” unless they want to tax me for feeding my kids and getting dicked by the dad.

A friend went through the same thing last year; alikuwa hajalipa/filed returns for a while. Ile stress mwanaume alipata…let me just say I felt for him.

I think many of us dismiss the taxes issue as a minor thing, but when they find you they will your latest (and likely most successful) period to determine what you owe. Sasa hapo ndipo kukamuliwa full

He, he, apana cheza na taxman, how they even got my phone number I don’t know since I don’t know of any time I have ever filled it on anything to do with KRA.
