Lake Magadi and Olorgesailie Photo Gallery

Last weekend I took a group of adventure seekers to Lake Magadi a salty lake that is less than two hour (120 km) drive away from Nairobi. It is the southernmost lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, lying in a catchment of faulted volcanic rocks, north of Tanzania’s Lake Natron. During the dry season, it is 80% covered by soda and is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos.

We took on Langata Rd and finally Magadi Rd, Rongai, Kiserian, Kona Baridi and all the way to Lake Magadi

Before then we had a stop at Olorgesailie pre historic site

This site was first discovered by by the British geologist John Walter Gregory in 1919 and later in 1942 researchers Dr. and Mrs. Leakey, started investigations on the site where they found important evidence that concerns the habits and activities of early prehistoric peoples of the Acheuleus or “Hand axe” culture.

Olorgesailie is noted for the large number of Acheulean hand axes discovered there that are associated with animal butchering

Lake Magadi Hot Water Springs - fed by underground hot water springs. Water here can rise up to 86 degrees. They say it is medicinal. I did not stay in it longer enough to prove this but lisemwalo lipo!

Temperatures at Lake Magadi are usually high and so after lunch we decided to indulge in some activities like swimming and team building in the pool at Lake Magadi Sports Club
