Nice…This will be a game changer in the region!

Just like The Idle, Lonely dying Isiolo Airport,
This is another huge white Elephant along Kenyan coast in the underdeveloped town of Lamu.

pessimist

What do you expect of Tanganyikan fool?

You can’t compare Lamu with Isiolo, be it a white elephant or not, remember that there’s NO incoming activities in Isiolo unlike Lamu where ships can dock and offload cargo to be taken in various destinations.

Hopefully it will open up those regions and bring development and growth.

You are in alot of pain, you wish to die.

Cargo from Lamu to where? Via What? No roads there.

Why wish to die?
Halafu demu wangu @Hot Chocolate! Utombe wewe?

There is nothing like ‘Hopefully ‘ when commissioning such big projects, Kwani hakukuwa na Feasibility study?

Naona maumivu yamezidi, utapata tabu sana.

Unajua vile vitu hufanywa Kenya hii.

Don’t listen to Mgosi. Let him tell us how Air Tanzania is doing after all the hype

Poa.

Lamu port berths are the biggest in Africa. 400 meters long in length and 1.2 Kms long container terminal for each berth. That’s a 250,000 TEUs capacity each per berth. It will be the first port in Africa to handle New Panamax container ships of 12,000 containers capacity. Currently Dar is being expanded to handle post panamax ships of 6000 containers capacity. Mombasa port berth 19-20-21 built recently during its expansion are 300 meters in length and 600 meters container terminal with capacity of 125,000 TEUs each. It can handle post panamax plus ships of 8000 container capacity.

Its immediate cargo evacuation route is the current Lamu-Witu-Garsen road that connects to Malindi and the rest of the country.

The problem was that from Garden to Lamu the road was narrow, shoulders were won out and surface was not good. In 2017 President Uhuru launched the 10 billion road construction by HZ Young to be completed by Dec 2019.

However we lost 9 months of construction time due to the extended elections period and insecurity fears that led workers to move with work slowly. However to me that place is the most heavily patrolled region in Kenya.

However following KeNHA board members/management inspection in April 2019, noticeable progress was noted and revised timelines set. It will now be ready in August 2020.

In most areas only the first layer of tarmack has been laid. More layers will be done in the coming months.

Its only at the beginning and the end that some sections are complete.

So transportation isn’t an issue, its heading to completion.

This Lamu port is a mega port construction project and unlike our dreamy neighbours its ongoing, its first 3 berths are fully funded by Treasury and on schedule. The first berth will be ready by Dec 2019 and it has a mega ship schedule to arrive by then. Second and third berth will be ready in Dec 2020. CCCC are working 24/7 to complete them on time.

Its a L shape port. What’s being constructed is the shorter length of the “L” shape. In 2020 government will advertise for the next phase of building 5 more berths to complete that length. Those will be container, general and bulk cargo berths. If you notice the design of the port is ingenious as it allows a cruise ship terminal on the land side and a marina dock area for yachts. The port itself provides a wave barrier to shield the passenger ships from rough and rocky waves at the ocean side. That land area will be a magnet for hotels and recreation facilities as it connects the cruise terminal and marina directly to the new proposed city.

Investors will be asked to bid to finance, build and operate the whole port. Tender will be only opened to global Top tier port operators.

Meanwhile Lappset corridor land acquisition from Lamu, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana is the only thing remaining for that toll road highway construction by PPP to start.

The Lokichar - Lamu oil pipeline also await that process completion of land corridor acquisition. They will build a crude oil terminal and LPG terminal. The LPG terminal provision is due to the successful natural gas find offshore in Lamu.

Early this year an Australian firm exploring for natural gas found both gas and oil offshore. They are studying the results before more drilling and decisions can be done.

Australian outfit confirms Kenya offshore oil find in Lamu Basin
NAIROBI (Xinhua) – Australian oil exploration firm Pancontinental Oil and Gas on Wednesday confirmed a verified oil found at one of its completed wells in the coastal region of Kenya. In a statement, the firm said the Sunbird-1 well, completed in March in area L10A, intersected a gross 29.6 m gas column overlying a gross 14 m oil column in the Sunbird Reef.
"We believe that this is a play-opening discovery in Kenya’s Lamu Basin.

“Because of the Sunbird discovery we expect to see a significant increase in industry interest offshore Kenya,” Pancontinental CEO Barry Rushworth said in a statement.“Now that we know there is a prospective oil system in the Lamu Basin and know the important technical details, we are in a prime position to explore for larger volumes of oil over our very extensive portfolio of prospects and leads,” he added.
Rushworth said oil and gas samples have been recovered and analyzed using sophisticated geochemical techniques. The Sunbird Reef is an ancient Miocene pinnacle reef buried beneath approximately 900 m of younger sediment. The Kenya L10A consortium consists of BG Group, operator, with 50 per cent working interest; PTTEP with 31.25 per cent working interest, and Pancontinental with 18.75 per cent working interest. Sunbird-1 is the first ever test of a Miocene Pinnacle Reef offshore East Africa, and the first ever exploration well in L10A in the Lamu Basin offshore Kenya. An extensive trend of Miocene Reefs is evident in Pancontinental’s four licence areas offshore southern Kenya, with Sunbird-1 regarded as a tight hole exploration well. According to the Australian firm, the results are highly significant because they are the first proof of the presence of a prospective offshore oil system in the Lamu Basin.
“Pancontinental Oil and Gas is pleased to advise that after lengthy analysis, it has been verified that the recently completed Sunbird-1 well off the southern Kenyan coast has intersected an oil column - the first ever oil discovered off the East African coast,” it said.

The oil and gas have been geochemically typed in detail and the prospective source rocks have been dated and characterized for use in future exploration.
"It is the only offshore oil column ever reported seaward of the eastern coast… from South Africa to Somalia.

"We believe that this is a play-opening discovery in Kenya’s Lamu Basin.

“Because of the Sunbird discovery we expect to see a significant increase in industry interest offshore Kenya,” Rushworth said.

Pancontinental has three exploration areas in the Lamu Basin covering a total area of about 15,000 sq km. The operator of the Block L10A Petroleum Sharing Contract, BG Group, is continuing to analyze the well data and will recommend a future exploration program using the well results.
The East African margin has become a focus of the global oil and gas exploration and production industry.

The land corridor has already been mapped out and NLC is currently sorting it out on the ground.
