For those of you saying to eat the locusts…
The locusts are only nutritious if they have been EATING. That means letting them destroy the crops. The females are larger and more nutritious as they fill up with eggs.
Also…once locusts die they begin to rot. If not cooked while alive a chemical change in their bodies makes them very bitter.
The work to preserve locusts is labor intensive. You have to catch them. Peel their wings off whilst alive, boil them whilst alive, then either pickle them in vinegar or preserve them in salt.
I guess you could funnel a swarm into a vat of boiling water, then peel them before salting or pickling. Still a LOT of work from a group of folks who do the least possible to get by. (Ever wonder why white kids are sent to African countries to dig wells, build mud walls, build schools and teach kids to read? Coz the locals won’t do these things themselves. I can’t imagine they would be interested in preserving food for later use).
