A Kenyan family living in the United States is searching for their relative who went missing in February.

The Nation has established that Nightman was charged with multiple felonies as he allegedly used her credit cards several times after she disappeared.

Her brother Chris Gakwa said the family suspected that something horrible might have happened and requested the police to investigate.
“We have a reason to believe that something terrible might have happened since she is not known for being silent for such a long time,” he said.

Mr Gakwa said that Nightman had been found guilty of using her email and stealing her banking cards.

An affidavit filed in a court in Gillette revealed that Nightman was arrested and questioned by the police over the disappearance.

He denied that he had interacted with her, claiming that she had left Gillette in March and bid him goodbye before boarding a dark-colored SUV.

“She used to call our parents almost on a daily basis and also kept in touch with us. My sister is not a silent person because we believe she might not be okay currently,” Mr Gakwa told the Nation by phone.

Investigations by the Gillette police revealed that Nightman, a US national, had stolen over Sh366,600 from Ms Gakwa.

He spent Sh60,000 to purchase a pair of boots and a pair of trousers at a Walmart store.

The suspect was captured as he carried the items from the supermarket after he had paid for them using Ms Gakwa’s banking card.

Detectives said Nightman also used the card from his home address and they found a total of 10 transactions.

They have interviewed Ms Gakwa’s friends and associates and have executed about two dozen search warrants with the aim of finding her.

The family said that she had lived in the US since 2019 and was a nursing student.

US-based media outlets said Ms Gakwa met her boyfriend on a dating website but he instantly started controlling her.

The suspect even forced her to move from Idaho to Wyoming.

The family was also concerned when they received strange text messages from her phone on March 3.

In the messages, she informed her family that she would be moving to Texas because she did not like it in Gillette.

Nathan Hightman, 38, is accused of transferring Sh300,000 from Ms Irene Wairimu Gakwa’s bank account to his personal account.

The man also used credit cards to purchase boots and a shovel.

He also deleted his email account and as well changed her banking password.

Mr Hightman was arrested on May 10 by Gillette police officers.

Steven Titus, who is the suspect’s attorney, said that his client pleaded not guilty.
“Mr Hightman pleaded not guilty to all four charges on Tuesday afternoon,” the Attorney told international media.

Ms Wairimu was reported missing on February 24 by her brother.
To date, she is still missing and the Gillette Police Department have no updates on what really transpired.

The suspect told the detectives at the station that Ms Wairimu arrived home from a restaurant and informed him that she was leaving Gillette.
The details captured in court documents show that she also packed her clothes in two bags and left with someone who was driving a dark SUV.
However, the suspect admitted that he had accessed Ms Wairimu’s bank accounts and withdrawn the money with the aim of having her reach out in vain.

Police have categorized Mr Hightman as a person of interest in the woman’s disappearance but he has completely refused to cooperate with investigators.

Ms Wairimu had moved to the US roughly five years ago to further her studies and was taking nursing when she met Mr Hightman on an online dating website.

Her family claims that Mr Hightman encouraged her to lie to them about her whereabouts because she had said she lives in Arizona until it emerged that she was living in Wyoming.

Mr Chris Gakwa, brother of Ms Wairimu, said his parents in Kenya have been worried and it has been hard for them to come to terms with what happened.
“It is very stressful. We don’t even want to talk about it. You feel helpless,” he said.

In an interview with the Nation, Mr Francis Gakwa, Ms Gakwa’s father, urged the police to speed up their investigations.
He said the details that had been made public showed that Mr Hightman knew something about her disappearance.

“If he had closed her social media accounts, he would have been using bank details that belong to my daughter. What else are we looking for?” said Mr Gakwa, who lives in Nkoroi, Kajiado County.

The family has opened a Facebook page, Find Irene Gakwa, and the public has been asked to share any information that would help the family find their relative.

Police issued a statement asking civilians to assist in locating a grey or silver Subaru Crosstrek with Idaho license plates that may be trespassing on private property or in rural areas of Campbell County between February 24 and March 20.

They asked members of the public to report to them if they saw the vehicle, which “has been trespassing on private property or appearing out of place since February 24”.

“The Gillette police department is also requesting information regarding the possibility of a 55-gallon metal drum, which may have been burned and/or abandoned within the county.”
