The Denver Nuggets and reigning back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokic have reportedly agreed to a five-year $264 million supermax contract extension, the richest agreement in NBA history, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
Charania noted Jokic will have a player option for the 2027-28 season worth $60 million.
Jokic has averaged 26.7 points on 57.5 percent shooting, 12.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists over his past two seasons. He’s led the NBA in player efficiency rating each of those years, per Basketball-Reference.

The 27-year-old has also led Denver to the playoffs each of the last four seasons, including a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2019-20.

Shaq could easily choke on his saliva when he sees this.

While NBA contracts are on average generally higher than soccer contracts, some numbers thrown in soccer are unfathomable. e.g. Messi’s last deal with Barcelona was an astounding 555 million euros ($673 million) over four seasons, which equates to roughly 138 million euros ($167 million) each season.

Or Mbappe’s $125 million lumpsum golden handshake to re-sign on for PSG

Soccer makes more $$ than the NBA. Their stadium capacities are almost 4 times the size of NBA arenas too.

NBA players though I see are paid better on average. This is because of:

  1. Most NBA teams do not own the arena. Just lease it. Therefore don’t have high capex costs and operational costs associated with building out such structures. Contrast this with the recent $1bn Tottenham stadium build.
  2. NBA teams have very small roasters. An NBA team can have a maximum of only 15 players.
  3. NBA teams don’t have expensive academies and B teams to pay. All NBA talent comes directly from the colleges or European league unlike soccer talents who typically almost only come from academies. Hakuna mambo za expensive academies kwa NBA that are expensive to run and maintain.
  4. NBA has no transfer fees so the highest player expense is just player wages. Agent fees are also capped at 3% of the player contract which ensures there is no Mino Raiola situation where an agent is demanding $40m from the buying club to facilitate a transfer.

Also NBA is a small league compared to Soccer which has a worldwide following. Ask any kid in Kenya they probably know Messi, but ukienda Isiolo watamjua Kevin Durant kweli. So there’s way more advertisers to soccer. That’s where league income comes from, mostly adverts and TV rights which are tied to that.

Its equivalent to what he was making during his years. His contract numbers were just as crazy then. Inflation moves figures higher every year.

Yeah but he was Shaq. Compare his numbers with this dude. First 4 years in Orlando, ~28 PPG, almost 60% FG percentage, >10 rebounds per game, Eastern Conference Champions -mark you after beating then 3-time Jordan and his bulls-, NBA finals appearance, almost won the MVP and he believed Robinson and the NBA cheated him out of it, crazy endorsement deals, and along with Penny basically made an expansion team the talk of the NBA in the US and globally. Vin Baker was making more with almost none of those stats. Nevertheless, let’s see how this plays out.

Market conditions come into play. Another team can offer similar if Nuggets dont. So they have to max him. If you ever watched Nuggets play, he’s the go to man in the team. Every other play goes through him. So naturally, his points will be inflated. But at conference finals, he will really be pressured. Then you will see he’s not a Luka Doncic.

Vin Baker was playing in a team with a bigger market than Shaq. Seattle vs Orlando. So team could throw him a bigger contract. Also remember Orlando had Penny to pay. And the orthers, Horace Grant and Dennis Scott were not cheap.
