Back in 1997 was in class 7 then, after kufunga shule my parents we’re really strict then ulikuwa unafika home unaambiwa “panda hiyo lorry muende kazi ukatafute school fees” They had a posho mill in nairobi and a few small trucks some for sourcing maize and others supplying flour/sales.
So this trip we we’re sent to ukambani Wote to look for maize, tuko mimi na driver Njiru. Woke up at 6am nakuta njiru ananingoja outside gate ya home na lorry. Immediately the journey starts akaweka tape ya one man guitar Sammy Wambua - Kilunda kiyisi mbesa - …remember this song really well coz he kept on repeating it, guess it was a hit then.
Tulifika poa n loaded the same day, bt on our way back from wote through emali, wacha mvua ianguke, kumbe el nino ndio inaanza n we don’t know. Wacha truck ikwame , for a whole week we barely did a kilometer. There we’re no mobile phones then so no communication n to make matters worse a bridge on the road we we’re supposed to pass through collapsed coz of floods.
So this day we are stuck in the truck cabin coz its been raining all morning, its my turn to rush to a nearby town for food once the rain subsides, my friend Njiru sees a yellow yellow momo being rained on akamkaribisha aingie kwa gari.
Njiru; “Habari yako mama?”
Yello yello; “Msuli”
