pig farming

On Saturdays paper…guy bought 4 sows, already served(artificial insemination), and they gave birth to over 50 piglets. Selling price for each piglet is @3500. Gents n ladies, bet this is a viable investment…Assuming he keeps half of the piglets(female/sows) to maturity and gets them served, they could give birth to over 250 piglets(25 sows/each 10 piglets),Sells 200 of them at 3500, totals sales would be 700k…Guys parting shot was he sells 50 pigs at 14000 every month making 700k clean cash…NB he doesn’t buy feeds/he makes them…What’s your take Talkers…sounds great to me…

Yeah, that was good article. He sells at least 50 pigs every month at an average of Sh14,000 a head to Farmer’s Choice, the biggest processor of pig products in Kenya. Hence, gross income Kshs 700,000 per month. Who knows what his overhead costs may be…

inputs?

Our incompetent journalists always leave out such details, to avoid messing with the feel good/inspirational nature of such articles. It’s like they never heard about sales and gross vs net income. Mediocrity tu.

If he is making his own feeds that means he has more than halved his feeding costs and that’s what takes up the bulk of pig/ poultry farming. He’s making good cash.

Farmers choice come for the pigs on every sale…making 700k/month, sure thing is that the feeding n vet services haiwezi fikisha 300k…Try checking story ya Mr Magu pig farming in Thika…Guys has over 1300 pigs…Feeding esp via own feed(importing soya, grains) from UG n Rwanda then production is quite cheaper…

I know of a boda boda guy who took a loan of 240K, bought 62 piglets last year at 3-4k Last year…The guy now has 110 pigs n seems to be loving his hustle…already has a pickup to transport his feeds…

The guy had infrastructure in place which is very different from someone who’s starting at “zero.” First of all, he was the human resources director at BAT for… presumably many years, which means he had the necessary capital for this investment and could easily absorb losses at the beginning. Also, a 50 acre farm near Nairobi (Isinya), and a borehole. The total cost of sinking a borehole is upwards of 700-800k. A young guy straight out of college can’t expect to be earning anywhere near what he’s making right now. After all, he’s one of the top pig farmers in the ENTIRE country. But, where he’s at is a worthy aspiration for anyone interested in this venture.

Doesn’t look that lucrative. Guy gets a gross of 700K.

Minus feeds- Say 200K
Minus labour- cleaning for 550 pigs is no joke. May be some 5 guys at 15K each=75K
Minus Salaries- A graduate animal husbandry guy could get 50K. plus a driver. Plus accountant/store guy. Say 100K
Mis= Electricity 20K, water 20K, etc so give it 50K.

Total expenses aprox 450K. Guy only makes 250K per month. this should be his side-hustle.

@aviator…250k not bad still…Breakdown ya the bodaboda guy I mentioned earlier…Ako kwa family farm mwihoko…Labour- he got 2 guys each getting 7k/pm… Feeds- he buys the hotel remnants from the Huruma n Kayole stores at sh 60 per bag.(1 bag got 20kgs enough to feed 1 pig for 6days),Easier to start with fewer pigs but in pig farming, the more the better… He buys piglets at 3 months, disposes them at 6-7 month, 70kg juu… Shs 220/kg to farmers choice…Its all about a step at a time in all hustles…

Really? 20kgs for 6 days? I thought pigs are heavy feeders, plus that kind of feeds affect the quality of the final product. I remember attending some training at farmers choice and they said the price is between 200 and 285/kg. Probably he gets 220 coz of the quality.

Pigs daily intake is 2-3 KGS of food…Farmers choice buy pigs at 220/kg and a 10% increase in BP if it exceeds 60kgs…
They insist on buying their feeds…Most small scale farmers feed their pigs on foods from hotels,(eg the food in kayole n Huruma are well sorted out and cheap though you may have issues with their health coz of worms),

Asante kwa informative article…bizna for a change kkunda doo sio tu the ‘alleged hekaya’ ina dominate hapa

Seems all odds are stacked against “we” smallwigs. Where would anyone (smallwigs) get space to hold 10 or so pigs? Nice read though

Those bags of leftover food for pig was retailing at 100shs per bag. and that was back in 2013, I know this coz I was at a meeting mediating between private garbage collection company contracted by the county govt and local garbage collectors.

Don’t leftover foods make pigs fat, hence leading to low quality pork? And as someone pointed out hapo juu, probably lead to their being infested with worms???

How do you work your way around this to have a high quality product nonetheless?

And now that garbage collection chaps are involved, isn’t it a little “poisonous” to the pigs?
