What do you think are the prospects? Has Covid-19 diminished many entry-level positions? Should one ramp up on various certifications? Also at this point, what can one do to earn some income from home using programming and IT skills? Is it viable?

The world is your oyster. Don't limit yourself to only IT related stuff. Be open minded to take on and apply for other opportunities kama graduate trainee, intern, research assistant etc. Many have found their feet in their career from very unusual and unexpected places.
