Look at what happened to Japan and German after world war two. Their economies grew tremendously, not because they possessed superior production factors, but because they extracted concessions from the victors. In this arrangement, the two countries were to abandon their war philosophy in exchange of which they would gain preferential access to the American market as well as easy access to raw materials under British and French domains. Without such concessions, there certainly was going to be a next bout, in which America and Company would not be guaranteed victory. History books never tell you that Japan and Germany lost narrowly.
