Rwanda Launches Satellite To Connect Remote Schools To Internet

At exactly 23h37 local time, all eyes will be on the national television as Rwanda and telecommunication giant One Web will launch the first ever Satellite that will connect remote schools to the internet.

The global Satellite named ‘Icyerekezo’ is a symbol of Rwanda’s commitment to build the local space industry, build local capacity, inspire the younger generation and prepare to usher Rwanda into a hyper-connected future, Rwanda’s Ministry of Information Telecommunication Technology and Innovation said in a statement.

In January this year, Rwanda announced its long-term space program plan, with a complementary initiative to launch its own first satellite this year.

Subsequently, during the recent World Government Summit, UNICEF announced Rwanda’s partnership with Project Connect – an initiative designed to visually map school connectivity status globally.

These datasets are crucial input into designing sustainable programs for connecting schools across Rwanda and globally.

The “Icyerekezo” satellite named by students from Nkombo Island – one of the remotest Islands within the volcanic Lake Kivu in the western part of the country.

“Rwanda’s choice to invest in space technologies is part of our broader mission to bridge the digital divide by providing equal digital opportunities to rural and remote communities,” said Paula Ingabire, Minister of ICT and Innovation.

The country has also rolled a fiber optic backbone network – currently covering 92% of 3G Coverage, and 96.6% 4G LTE coverage.

Rwanda is behind us sana … ata wajichoche aje the place is boring and slow af…

As they are launching satellites, we are busy launching corruption scandals . That country soon will be the Singapore of Africa whereas Kenya will be a carbon copy of Nigeria

What if I told you we have a satellite in space already.
The positive vibes reated to Rwanda are nice but you have to remember we are wayyy ahead of them in many things apart from governance, environmental protection and good ol’ PR.

Don’t go there …little secret: it’s not how fast you run but how you finish my friend. How are Kenyans finishing their country with impunity in comparison to Rwandese?

I’ve been there. It’s just a tiny, beautiful, people full of fear and intimidation country with nothing fun to do. Says a lot when their top attraction is the Kigali Genocide Memorial and moneyed peeps go to Kampala to have a decent party experience. Are they doing better than Kenya? Yes. Would I relocate even if given incredible incentives? No.

Life is not all about fun my friend. There are other things that count more in life than just fun. In the course ya wewe kutafuta fun in Kenya unalingwa risasi na hessy wa dandora, whereas in Rwanda you can sleep with your door open hata kama there is no fun!!! See the difference?

Look at it this way: the main tourist attraction Rwanda has is genocide museum and there is a reason behind it: to remind them what hate can do.So if they want to succeed like they are progressing now they need unity. In Kenya do you have a museum for 1992, 2007, 2017 PEV? hakuna and trust me 2022 mtauwana tu.it might take Rwanda 20 years but they will get there

At no one time did I say life is about fun. However, as humans, we have way more needs than a clean environment. The reason Solitary Confinement in prison is so inhumane is because it isolates the subject from living freely with others in an expressive manner as is our nature which many Rwandans are under. It feels like a huge and fenced community with lingering soldiers on street corners and spies everywhere you go. The company I work with also might not end up investing there because the regulation is next to none. Of course that is expected and unlimited freedom isn’t always a solution (good example being UG)…
I have travelled extensively my Fren and I can tell you what we have in KE is not always a given.

Baby Cubestat which only has the lifecycle of 12 months will probably deorbit in the next two months.

We’ve totally dropped the ball in Space development when in 70’s and 80’s we were launching rockets and we could have learned valuable information from NASA to develop and build our own systems.

hio ilishaibiwa.Uko sure haikua scandal ingine ya kunyonya pesa? whats it for btw since inaranda randa huko space? i remember it got launched in malindi …by italians no doubt…without so much hulabaloo

Acha Umeffi! fala, Thats a step they have made, at times compliment and be positive, Kenya kuna hiyo ya Gava
