Say you want to send someone some Safaricom Internet bundles. There are two ways: The first and easiest is sambazaring your internet bundles through the service sambaza internet. However, the limit is 10MB per transaction and 20 MB per day. 10 MB is very little data so we go to the second option. You can purchase for them directly through *544# then select buy for another number. This way you will be charged from your MPESA account or your active airtime credit.
It is in the second option where the devil lies. Safaricom has perfected all means of using up your airtime/MPESA money. What am I talking about? Say I want to send someone 350MB worth of Safaricom Internet bundles. 350MB costs 250 bob. I will select the second option i.e buy for another number. Now let’s assume the recipient has an okoa jahazi debt of 100bob. If I choose to pay through MPESA i’ll be billed 350 bob instead of 250 bob. Where did the 100 bob come from?
The extra 100 bob is as a result of Safaricom forcing me to pay the recipient’s okoa jahazi debt. You best believe it. Remember I am talking of okoa jahazi debtnot okoa bundles debt. Safaricom want me to pay the other party’s debt in order for me to purchase for them bundles and there is no way out of this; you either pay or stay with your money. I feel that this is not right. Here is proof
