In my limited world, software refers to an application on my PC. An app has limited but nifty application on my phone. If you trying to tell me that there’s no difference, well I already know that; but most people keep them separated like that. So the joke’s on you.

software refers to code in general that control a computer while an application is software made for a specific purpose and is executable. eg Android OS that’s software but whatsapp is an app or windows is an OS but your browser chrome or Firefox is an app.
apps are not limited to phone but also PC’s, the web eg xenforo is a web app
