I never understand what mechanics check during service to decide if you need new plugs, ama the old ones zitasukuma kiasi. Sometimes, they will just brush the old ones and you are good. At other times wanazitupa (probably to brush for the next client).
How do you determine when to buy new ones?
Kamau & Njoroge use what they call ‘mithi’ to determine when they’re worn. You as a driver are best positioned to identify when they’re not working as they should. Low power, increased fuel consumption over same distances, excessive smoke (sometimes), problems starting after parking for a while, etc.
You tend to notice that the car doesn’t have power, or you smell petrol when the engine us on. They normally use sandpaper to wipe them clean for the next client.

The gap in the labelled diagram is what determines kama zimeisha ama bado. when new the gap is too small but vile zinaisha the pin becomes smaller by size. Next time u go for service compare a new plug and an old one then u will know the difference.

always always always buy new plugs, note their lifecycle (10k or 20k kms) and replace with NEW ones.
never never ever ever use old spark plugs. ever ever.

Rule of Thumb: Buy a new set if you can’t remember when you bought the current set.
Therefore it is advisable for one to replace them after every 10k km. For engine oil is 5k km and what of other lubricants like transmission fluid? I bought a refurbished car and engine oil look clean so I have decided to use it for 5k km and before I change it.
Different engine oils will be changed at different intervals depending on type of oil (mineral-based, synthetic or semisynthetic), type of engine (whether diesel or petrol fuelled), engine manufacturer’s own recommendation, age of engine, nature of driving, oil manufacturer’s recommendation, etc. Before settling for that blanket recommendation of 5k, I’d highly recommend you get in touch with the oil manufacturer to get their recommendation for your engine type, oil type and nature of driving. Same holds for transmission fluids. You’ll be thankful you did. Halafu, whatever mileage they give you, I’ve seen it previously recommended to change engine oil at that or at six months, whichever comes earlier.
