Stealing from Africa

How much profit is fair? To find out more and get teaching resources, go to www.whypoverty.net

Rüschlikon is a village in Switzerland with a very low tax rate and very wealthy residents. But it receives more tax revenue than it can use. This is largely thanks to one resident - Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians. Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed. Based on original research into public documents, the film describes the tax system employed by multinational companies in Africa.

Ivan glasenberg does not own the coppermine, glencore does. Ivan owns less than 6%of glencore. Zambia govt receives the peoples share and spends it on their priorities. Again this nonsense of saying that you have natural resources so you should not be poor is the cause of poverty. The greatest resource of any country is its people. Invest in them and you will get ahead.

I’ve seen this video before. It’s an all too familiar sad tale for Africa. We need to rethink how to progress. Get people more educated & innovative.

It is uncommon to find well educated people coming to work for these same companies while worshiping fake FDI, new dialect, and newly acquired knowledge of feminism and fake democracy.

This is beyond education. Only natural evolution can cure it.

A proper upbringing that involves teaching proper morals, open mindedness and encouraging curiosity would help counter backwardness.

First of all fair is not an objective measure what is fair to me might not be fair to you.
Second fdi is necessary for economies to growth, especially poor countries. Without capital from big mining firms Zambia would be earning zero as that resource would still be stuck underground. The company incurred an expense to bring that copper to the market it deserves a return on its investment.

netflow of cash is negative for native African.

But then we have to allow exploitation because a foreign investors must achieve ROI…

@vanadium you ask How much profit is fair. Fair is such an arbitrary concept that many philosophers couldn’t answer that question after weeks of debating. Communists would argue that there should be a ceiling while capitalists reject that notion. Naturally we are capitalists because we are insecure and survival instincts is sky high.
When humanity rises above the isms then we will have reached the utopia.

Second that.
